  • Installing X3 on a drive other than C?

Hi folks,

I just d/l'd the X3 demo and the installation routine would only install X3 onto my C partition. Does the regular full-install of Producer allow you to install on another partition besides C?

I got into the habit years ago, as a way of protecting my data in the event of a boot sector failure or other OS-related calamity, of installing the OS and OS-related utilities only onto the C partition. Everything else gets installed onto higher partitions.

I was able to install X2 onto a higher partition. I'm just hoping this installation onto C only just a "feature" of the trial version.

FYI you are aware the boot sector can go on any hard drive and you are able to boot off USB keys?
Also please note the registry (where your apps settings are stored) will always be where you operating system is, so if your OS drive screws up your apps will still need to be reinstalled (unless you have a backup).

What matters is which hard drive failed and whether you have a backup. I would also recommend RAID mirroring and Acronis True Image with an external storage facility such as an external hard drive.

I suspect the demo and the full version will behave no different here. I would strongly recommend installing your apps on your OS drive until you run out of space (makes life a lot easier). What you are doing right now does nothing to reduce the chances of failure or recovery. What you really need to do is separate your data from your apps.

Cheers...

but install on c only?

I have all versions of SONAR, including X3, installed on a different partition from the O/S. I'm not sure why the demo did not allow that, but the full release will.

This is for optimal performance:

C: Drive = For all programs, including SONAR
D: or E: Drive = For Audio only (Sonar Projects)
F: Drive = For Samples Only and SONAR Backups (if you do not have an external for backups)
External Drive: =  For back-ups

Yes, I am aware of this.

I use an external drive for backups of data files only.

This is not entirely correct. If my C drive fails, I will have to replace the OS and reinstall my applications (even if they are on a drive different from the OS because all those dlls and what have you are now gone.), but my data files will be safe on their separate drive. So in that respect, no recovery will even be necessary. I already store my data files separately from my apps. In this case, however, they are both stored on the same drive, just different folders. It is an easy enough task, however, saving the data files to a different drive. But given that Sonar likes to store segments of a project in all sorts of different areas -- especially audio segments --  I would just as soon that all these areas are someplace other than C:

Optimal, perhaps, but my machine has no problems running X2 from the E drive (Drive 2, partition 2). You know that little performance meter that Sonar has? With my system it barely comes off the stop, but I'm probably not taxing the system very hard. My most intensive setup so far is nine tracks, eight of which are soft synths, the last one is audio (guitar). I don't see my needs being much greater than that for the foreseeable future.

lawp, I expect that this is a peculiarity of the trial version. brundlefly, thanks for confirming that it will install on a drive other than C.

I do something similar to CJaysMusic although I also put my plugins on a separate drive (although this is unlikely to make any difference to my performance). My point was it's best to separate apps and data onto separate partitions (and ideally different drives) for exactly the reasons your describe (looks like you know this looking at your follow up post). However to push a point, I would strongly recommend looking into cloning your drives (one day you might thank yourself).

Anyway glad you got your answer.

Not sure I understand why you would make this comment. As;

Sonar only saves a single project file with an audio file for each track or rendered audio clip. No more; and it only saves those files in one of 2 locations, either the project Audio folder if using Save per project audio folders or in the global audio folder if the former is not selected.
