  • [Answered] Easiest way to equally raise all volumes (p.2)

Exactly, the master fader is a bus, and check out buses. You could even route to another bus before it goes to the master.
Grouping really is for the odd fader or two (well heck do what you like, it's your workflow, but that's my suggestion). Ta.

You should not, in my opinion, turn up your master fader to gain a bit of volume.
I always have mine set at 0dB and if my signal either clips or doesn't have enough level then I will either raise or lower my tracks and/or busses or ignore it completely and deal with it when mastering.

There is another option. I insert a buss between all my other busses & the master buss called pre master.
All other busses - Drums/guitars/Vocals/Fx feed into this one and only the output of this one goes to the master.

There is also a theoretical issue with raising or lowering your master buss.
If you raise it you run a real risk of clipping your converters
If you lower it, you're not utilising the full 24bits [more realistically about 22bits] of your interface and run the risk of compromising your SNR

+1 Colin. Anyway there's plenty of workflow options here now.

Master bus gain is an easy thing to adjust.

It's important to have some concept of gain-staging in general... but if your levels are reasonable, you can use the bus input gain to raise your levels all together without moving the faders or volume automation envelopes or using off-set mode.

I agree with Bristol_Jonesey that I don't move the master bus fader often. I will move the master bus gain. just not the master bus fader.

Master buss gain is another option.

i was also thinking master bus gain (i.e. input volume)
but quick grouping is nice too.

if the tracks are already at or near untiy gain i would NOT raise them any further.  I would NEVER raise the master volume above unity (0db) gain either.   Never.

Assuming there is a compressor of some type in the master bus, raising the input/output of said compressor is another option.

If you have automation, go into offset mode and raise ALL the faders from that view.   It raised ALL faders relative.   Type 'o' or hit the offset button.   This is a great way to make overall fader adjustments if you have automation on one or all of your faders.

BlixYZ I would NEVER raise the master volume above unity (0db) gain either.   Never.

I often mix live concerts. Sometimes I will automate the Master Bus volume to max to save some crowd clapping at the end of the track. This is usually in addition to boosting room mics etc.

I'm just saying, I can't say I'd NEVER do it. It's way rare.
