  • [Solved] X3 Demo killed my 8.5

I was going to finally cave in - Would be nice to have Pro Channel, Melodyne and the other goodies in X3.  Still can-not-stand the look of the interface, but since it sounds like things are finally working well with X3, I was going to buy it today, the last day of the $150 upgrade deal.

I've been using 8.5 with zero problems for years now.  Was working on a mix last night in fact.

Thought it could be good to poke around with the X3 demo first. The program installed, but when I tried to run it -Error message:

"Unable to register the DLL/OCX: RegSvr32 failed with exit code."  Tried to fix that as per the TONS of results I got on that when I Googled it.  FIVE un and reinstalls later--gave up, got rid of the demo installer.

Now 8.5 doesn't work.  The dreaded Microsoft VIsual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error.

I have spent hours now running Windows 7 updates, trying a restore point - now when I've downloaded 8.5 again from my account page, have tried twice to install it - says the file is corrupt and won't install.

I-Am-Pissed-Off.  At first I was sitting here holding out my hard-earned $150 - Next, I'm running away from X3 as fast as I can, and in the wake of trying it out, my Sonar is broken, I'm dead in the water.

Running the demo updated things in my master Cakewalk file - broke something 8.5 needed - I guess.  Great.

And that's the short version of the horror story.

Anything in this message that gives folks an idea of what I can do?

Did you not have a backup?

Otherwise please run windows update several times (including optional performance updates, .NET and C++ stuff), if that doesn't fix it run this:

 Fingers crossed...

Thanks for the reply, Alex - I have run all available Windows updates twice today, and the vcredist files you linked to I've now run twice. - No joy.

Did I not have a backup of 8.5?  Yes - I thought getting a fresh download would be good, so got that.  Odd that it gave me a different serial # than the original--?  But ran that--No change.

Kicking self down the stairs and back - I've avoided all Sonar Xs since the nightmare of the first X1 release - got sucked in again, and now this- A day of doing everything under the sun to just get back what I had last night.

The X3 demo somehow messed with the Visual C++ Runtime Library?

C++ dependencies aren't really Sonar's fault, this is a Windows thing...
Once you get this sorted you could probably install the demo again...

Maybe this tool will help you work out the library you need:, open up the file that is crashing to find any missing dependencies, full instructions on the website (and maybe youtube)

--I'll follow the link and try it, thanks Alex.  Why would installing a Sonar demo screw up my existing Sonar?  I just don't get it.  Re-installing 8.5 twice now yields no change.  I'm pretty much freaking.  I'll go look at "Dependency Walker"--I peeked,- hope I can figure it out.

Edited previous post (sorry)...
Software often requires program libraries, Sonar is this case required C++. Multiple applications may be dependant on different versions of these programming libraries.

Normally if all software is totally up to date it isn't much of a problem, but with old software on newer operating systems that are receiving updates you could run into issues.

It's more of a windows thing anyway, and lots of software shares library component, and often these dependencies get muddled... Take a deep breath I'm sure you'll find the issue.

Also please check you windows event viewer log for errors.

A report from Dependency Walker, analyzing the Sonar .exe file:

Warning: At least one delay-load dependency module was not found.
Warning: At least one module has an unresolved import due to a missing export function in a delay-load dependent module.

And there's a long list of missing files - "Error opening file.  The system cannot find the file specified."  Things like "API-MIS-WIN-APPMODEL-RUNTIME-L1-1-0.dll"

Would love to just use the restore point from before the demo install.  Ran that - Restore point failed.

I'm out of my depth trying to unravel this - I just keep trying things like Windows "Fixit" routines - they just say their routines fail when I run them.

This machine was running PERFECTLY-- Sonar Demo - BOOM-Fried - I can't get over it.

You definitely ran exactly what I linked to in #2, not later or earlier version of the redistributable?

If so and still no joy try this:

Are you running 64 bit everywhere?

I always have both 32 bit and 64 bit versions on 'puter - I've done complete uninstall of 8.5, reinstall, same results. Your new link is to Visual C++ 2010, and I've run that twice today.  When reinstalling Sonar I see it runs C++ 2005.

EDIT:  More accurately - when I run that C++2010 package, it refuses to install because I have newer versions on the machine.

Here's a bite - I tried my X1 which I've kept though I loathe it.  It works, opens and plays fine!  But I can't stand it. It will be VERY last plan to just use it instead of 8.5 beauty I had until last night.  Obviously not springing for X3 update after this nightmare.

I think it's hopeless.  I've tried running from restore points three times today-they all fail.  Haven't been so disgusted with software since I don't know when - Oh I DO know when - when I first installed X1 soon after its release.  lol.
