Limiting and distortion go hand-in-hand. When a guitarist manipulates his gain structure to obtain distortion and increase sustain, he's turning his amplifier into a limiter. That Boost11 causes distortion should come as no surprise, but not all distortion is necessarily undesirable or unpleasant.

All limiters are capable of introducing audible distortion. Some just make it easier to achieve than others. My problem with Boost11, and why I don't use it, is that it makes it way too easy.

Limiters are used for a variety of purposes. Sometimes, you want as much transparency as possible. Sometimes you don't. Boost11 is for the latter case. That doesn't absolutely preclude it from a slot on the master bus, especially if used gently. But there are certainly better options for the majority of users in the majority of situations who just want to lift perceived volume without introducing noticeable distortion.

Boost 11 is indeed very helpful when you need to raise your volume and squash your mix - especially when you haven't yet researched the other Limiters out there.  Once you have, you'll probably be less inclined to use Boost 11.

My favorite use of BOOST11 is on drums to really add some punch! - S

If I wanted my drums to sound like they punched someone I'd sample a Bruce Lee film and then layer the samples in with Battery 4 or something........

I hate that "punchy" word, I'm very much from the Steve Albini camp on this. I want my drums to sound sweet, organic, tonal and like wood hitting skins.

I agree totally with Craig on this.  Basically Boost 11 crunches (distorts) anything going through it.

On tracks maybe but it does add crunch and to be perfectly honest it is not nice crunch either. (IMO)

I agree that the useful range of applying limiting to program material with Boost 11 (before the distortion becomes obvious) seems to be somewhat less than other limiters (I was going to say "more limited" but ...)

As much as I hate their business model, I really like the Waves L3 Multiband limiter.
