Up to X2, in v-vocal, the original clip would stay behind the vvocal clip (muted). now in x3, the original clip seems to be gone. is this correct? No 2nd chance?

Have you looked in the project audio folder. The original is probably still in there.

Once a clip is turned in to a V-Vocal Region FX clip, there is a menu of options in the upper right-hand corner of the clip. Click the menu to:
Remove the Region FX (this will undo the effect)
Open V-Vocal or
Bypass the effect

The original clip is most likely hidden behind the v-vocal clip.  Be sure to UN-select everything in track view, then drag the v-vocal clip to another lane/track and you should see the muted original.

Hmm, is my v-vocal corrupt then? I can see the original when i click on lanes, but it seems connected to the vvocal track. You cant move the original without moving the vvocal. the only thing you can do is click on rfx and hit remove to totally delete the vovocal. this really handicaps vvocal from what it was in previous version. am I doing something wrong?

I believe one difference in moving to Region FX is that V-Vocal no longer leaves the original clip in place after processing the clip. V-Vocal is a DirectX effect and on the wane, so the program is adapting to Melodyne's preferred method of working.

scook's comments in post #3 are correct. Studious's comments in post #4 are correct for versions prior to X3.

The workaround is to process a copy of the clip if you want to keep a safety. If I'm going to apply V-Vocal to a track, I clone the track and archive the clone. If I reach the end of the project and I'm happy with the V-Vocal track, I usually delete the clone.

Errrg. That makes me mad. The millennium seem to be the era of the "improved worse". meaning, even if we can't make it better, lets just change it for the worse so the people will think we made an improvement. I've noticed a couple things like this in X3. Like how every time you open a window it is in the useless docked position and it takes me 3 extra mouse clicks and drags to position it where I want it.

I think most people here would consider the ARA integration and use of Melodyne for pitch correction a MAJOR improvement. You have a choice of optimizing the program for Melodyne or for V-Vocal; you can't do both. If the price for ARA integration is working on a copy of a track if you want to retain a safety copy when using V-Vocal, I believe that's a valid tradeoff.

Seems like they could have just left v-vocal alone and added melodyne if they wanted. I personally do not like melodyne. They both have about the same sound quality given similar changes, however. V-vocal is much more versatile. Such as the pencil tool for starters, you can do just about any move with that. with melodyne your very restricted to it's own behavior. Also, the vibrato tool is great in v-vocal for a untrained singer that you have to flatten a note and then give it some life. I know melodyne has become very popular, but without those to things among others, melodyne is useless to me. (the poly thing is cool but I only use this stuff on vocals)
