I would never use anything like Driver Boost. Ever.

The safest way to update driver's is from the vendor and they all give us the option to do so when updates are available.

At the end of the day, before updating....

Think once, think twice and then THINK AGAIN!!!

Make absolutely sure you are updating drivers FOR THE RIGHT REASON, not because you have some blind problem with your software....

Having said that, in the audio world, Sound Card Driver updates are often worth updating but ALWAYS read the documentation before doing so and then make a well judged reason having read said documentation before updating and ALWAYS create a restore point.

Software is different however, The latest version can tempt you into updating and often charges a fee (Sonar X3, PT 11 for example)...But, again fundamentally the same rules apply, work out if you ACTUALLY need these updates.

If it aint broke, dont try and fix it, and if it is broke WORK OUT what is broken BEFORE you fix it.

I just want to say Alex that I was having a problem with a very occasional, very random bsod in Win7 x64. I was certain all of my drivers were up to date and was at my wits end. I am not a fan of the quick fix utilities either, but after reading your thread about Driver Booster I thought I would give it a shot - and it worked like a charm! It found new drivers for 3 intel system devices that I never would have discovered in a million years! System now rock solid thank you very much. I for one am thrilled that you recomended that particular software - and your instructions were spot on. It seems a shame that this thread may well put people off trying something that could be their saviour.

I have to agree with the above post, I tried Driver booster and found it to be a pretty good program. Being add supported, there are some things included with the package that you may not want installed, a custom install will take care of that for the most part.

To be honest, I still prefer Everest, now called AIDA64,
and go to summary and manually check for updates, but it is only free for 30 days. It is also great if you're repairing a computer that has a device not recognized by windows, most of the time it will identify those unknown devices and provides a DL link.

Not claiming to be an expert here, but I am also a Microsoft certified, A+ certified tech that has been building and repairing since the DOS days.
I would have to give my endorsement to Driver booster, but as with most add supported freeware, a careful custom install will be necessary.

Readers, the above post from ohgrant contains a link to a program that he recommends instead of Driver Boost.  I thought it might be a link to a website where I could read about AIDA64, but, instead, it immediately began downloading the program into my computer.  I cancelled the download right away because I don't know where this DL is coming from, and I wasn't given an opportunity to decide for myself whether I wanted it or not.  I'm very leery of downloading programs from unknown sources, and, although I don't mean to imply that ohgrant's program is harmful, I would have liked to have known that this was going to occur.  So, be aware if you click on his link that the program will download onto your computer.  I'm not judging his program because I have no intention of trying it.  Buyer beware!
