I'm not much of a SF guy, but if you're looking for something unusual I just finished reading Smuggler, by Roger Reaves.  Fascinating if even 1/2 of it is true.

Although it may not do much for your "cut down the smoking" plan.

Good suggestions, everyone. Sadly, the reason I am able to say that is because I have read almost all of them. Station Eleven is not among them, so that'll be my first download, based entirely on Mr. Baer's recommendation. From past conversations our tastes seem to be pretty much in sync.

Not sure I want to be reading the hashish smuggler's memoir while visiting a country where that'll get you life - if you're lucky. Maybe when I get back.

Duma Key, by Stephen King.  It's set in the Florida Keys, so probably would be better on the beach than on the plane ride.

Vacation? Good for you. Enjoy it.

If you haven't read it yet, you really should read the Dune series. I've read all original six volumes by Frank Herbert (I haven't read anything by his son yet), but really, the first four are the best. They would be Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, and God Emperor of Dune.

Just know that, like the Lord of the Rings books, the Dune books might need to be read more than once to catch all the intricate references in them!

I haven't read anything by his son either, but I think he had to step in and help finish the final Dune book after his dad passed away...

For sure on this, Craig. I read all six through twice and the first four books four times. Each time, it was extremely rewarding. It has been a while, however. Maybe sometime this year....

Richard Matheson is a great writer as well and a number of his books have been made into movies (although, it might be more accurate to say they were inspirations for movies; I Am Legend, the movie, is not very much like the book). A number of his books may be of interest for vacation reading as they tend to be on the shorter side. Besides I Am Legend, check out What Dreams May Come: A Novel, Hell House. andA Stir of Echoes. Good stuff by a writer that was awarded the title Grand Master of Horror by the World Horror Convention, and received the Bram Stoker Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Good call on Dune and LoTR. But I have read Dune (just the first two) twice through and LoTR many times. Still, I do have both here in paperback form. Ditto for Richard Matheson, a favorite of mine since I was 11, when I looked him up at the library after seeing his name in several Twilight Zone credits.

bitman: Thanks. Really. I will gladly read that if you'll read this one: https://www.amazon.com/God-Delusion-Richard-Dawkins/dp/0618918248/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1484024674&sr=1-1&keywords=the+god+delusion
