1 year ago I purchased a new computer and Sonar X1d, installed the software and new versions of drivers for the Tascam FW1884 and was up and running shortly. System seemed really stable, a couple of minor issues, which I fixed quickly. Just Turn the machine on, open sonar and start recording or mixing or whatever.  Recently I upgraded to X2, and now about 1/3 of the time, when I turn the computer on and open sonar, sonar doesn't seem to connect to the FW1884. I look in the preferences and it shows the FW1884 so I assume it sees it. I reboot and everything seems to be fine. Am able to do anything.  I have also noticed it takes sonar about a minute to open, and then some of my projects may take a minute or two to open. I am not sure if this is all related to sonar or not. I have disabled any un needed services, no virus scan, no internet connection. This is a dedicated recording computer.  The only recent softwares I have installed are ARC2 and iZotope Ozone5, which I don't think they would cause these issues.

Was wondering if any other FW1884 users have experienced this? Or if anyone has any suggestions what else i should look for.

I wait a good minute after firing up my Tascam and RME before I open SONAR. If I'm too anxious it's not recognized.

I did have one time where I needed to reboot the machine in order for the FW-1884 to be recognized. But.... I had not re-booted my machine in like 90 days before that (ya, I'm of the leave it on 24/7 school, I just turn off the Tascam and RME after a session is done).

I have 2 systems, both have FW1884's attached.
In the office; Win7x32 consequently both X1d Expanded and X2a Producer are x32 (really x86).
FW-1884 is the i/o and control surface.
X1 DEFINITELY boots quicker and loads the same project faster, I just tested it.

The Studio specs are in my sig below.
X1d Expanded x32 and X2a Producer x64.
The FW1884 is used only as a control surface, I've gone RME UFX for i/o.
It does "seem" that X2a is a little slow booting and loading projects.
I was kind of blaming this on the iLok 2, but maybe that's not the case.

IF the firewire led is lit on the FW, Sonar should see just fine.
I keep the Studio at 60 degrees this time of year, and the FW can be a bit flakey on initial boot.
There used to be endless threads about the FW having to "warm up".
There is a service bulletin to that effect, and I see it at low temps.

Thanks, I will wait a bit before i open sonar.

Warm up? Had no idea about that.  How long does it take to warm up? (i feel kinda silly asking).  :)

How long does it take to warm up?

For me, as I said, a full minute usually does it.

For me if the firewire led is "on", I'm good to go.

A bit of an old thread, but Tom: how do you use the FW-1884 as only control surface?

I want to try Sonar X3 with Windows 8 and my ESI PCI-e audiointerface which has quite good Win8 drivers.
(win8 /Sonar 8.5/FW-1884 worked quite nicely but firewire connection was a bit flakey because of the lack of "legacy firewire driver in Win8)

How do I use my ESI audiointerface and FW-1884 together?
Do you connect the FW-1884 only with midi in/out?

The 1884 is connected via Firewire, I just don't try to access the audio i/o.
I'm not sure anyone is having "good" results with the 1884 on a Win 8 machine.
There is a thread on the tascam forums.
Good luck!

Until my 1884 stops working, I stay on Windows 7!
