The problem was confirmed and fixed with a new driver on RME's side (within 3 days of reporting the issue... on a weekend... wow).
 
(EDIT): Apparently I don't have privileges to post links until I log another 13 posts...
 
The RME forum thread and the new driver can be found via gswitz link on reply 2.

Hi ewb,
That's great that they found the problem. I'm continually impressed with RME's support. I had a problem with TotalMix just after I got my MADI fx card and they found a problem and released a fix in very short order then as well. I do have to wonder why I'm not seeing the behavior here, but I should probably just be happy it hasn't caused me problems in the middle of a session and count myself lucky
