OK - I have to run out the door for about 6 hours, and will look this over when I return.  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can someone else here in the forum jump in and review all of the stuff above?

Just for grins, what happens to your latency if you temporarily physically remove your laptop battery, leaving it running via the plug?  I once had horrific laptop latency from a battery or its device drivers when it was almost near the end of its life.  I would have to run with the battery removed from the laptop to be able to use Sonar live, which sucked, because if it became unplugged it was instant shut off.

The funny part was watching the singer's head explode when that would happen.

Anyways, just a last quick thought prior to my dashing for a while.

Thanks to whomever jumps in to help.

We will get this figured out.

Edit: See Keith's post below this one first. The power settings on a laptop pretty much assume you are going to be on a battery (you will want to be plugged in when using SONAR and take his advice below)

I would check something quick in SONAR as well here... Are you running in ASIO mode on your interface?

Also, when doing playback, you can up mixing latency (Preferences->Audio->Driver Settings->[ASIO Panel]) Adjusting this higher takes stress off your CPU, but causes latency (which is fine for playback).

I/O buffers at may need to be bumped up as your files get larger (Advanced Mode: Preferences->Audio->Synch and Caching) try stepping that up in steps of 256 above where it is, but I would not take it above 1024.

If you keep latency monitor running, you can check out what your system has running on it per below:

As far as processes... In Win7 hit the Windows/Start button, type in "resource" and select "Resource Monitor" When that window pops up, click the "CPU" tab at the top, then click on the "Threads" header to sort them in descending order. With an off-the-shelf computer, you may have a lot of things that are running that you do not need. Look at the process description (some are obvious), and you can right click on these and select "Search Online" to find out what they are. In general, if something is not driving your system or hardware, it may be added overhead (browsers, chat programs, startup services for Adobe, MS Office, etc.)

In tandem with this, you can click the "memory" tab at the top and click the "Working Set" column in descending order. The same logic applies, can right click and search online if unsure, but programs not running your machine (browsers, chat programs, virus programs, office programs, etc.) can also be causing you issues.

For both sets of items listed above, you can run latency monitor after ending any processes (Right click->End Process Tree)

There's a big key bit of info in the log there:

From the first one...

CPU SPEED
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Reported CPU speed:                                   2294.0 MHz
Measured CPU speed:                                   519.0 MHz (approx.)

Note: reported execution times may be calculated based on a fixed reported CPU speed. Disable variable speed settings like Intel Speed Step and AMD Cool N Quiet in the BIOS setup for more accurate results.

Look at the Measured CPU speed.  519 MHz!.  That's a bit under clocked now.  You should turn off CPU throttling in the power settings.

Control Panel -> Power

If you're plugged in, you can try switching to High performance.

However, you'll want to check the CPU power mgmt.  Click on Change plan settings.
Then click the Change advanced power settings

Scroll down til you see Processor power management.

Here's what mine was set to:

and here's the setting in the high performance power plan.  (less green but less chance of glitching)

According to the product page, your laptop does mot meet minimum requirements for X3.

  • Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 2.67 GHz / AMD Phenom Quad Core 9750 2.4 Ghz or higher
You will need to do some serious tweaking to get your laptop to work with X3. I would go into MSCONFIG and disable anything but essential programs at startup. Almost like an intelligent safe mode.

Good luck.

Oh yeah, in terms of turning off wifi?  I usually go to Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager, find the wireless adapter under Network adapters, then right click and choose Disable.
Don't forget to do that again and choose Enable when you need the wifi again!  I do this all the time on a laptop I use for playing live (using SONAR's Matrix) when there's not a drummer.  Have different sections for verse, chorus, bridge, etc.

There is also an external option to turn off wifi on some laptops. If you see a lit up wifi icon on your laptop body, there is probably a touch area externally for on/off operation of the wifi adapter.

Maybe listing the active services here could help determine what is active and we can suggest services to turn off while using SONAR.

Yes, mine too, but I've found better results disabling the driver.  But do your own tests to see which is best for your setup.

I'm in Spain at the moment and they pronounce 'WiFi' as 'whiffy' here. There you go.

Thanks, guys!

I just got back, and read the above posts.  I hadn't time to go through what the OP had posted, so it was helpful to me and helpful to him to have spent some time digging into it all for him.

So, there are certainly some things to address, but do not give up on your laptop running Sonar just yet.

I think with some system tweaks to your power management settings, and some careful evaluation of background services and other things running, and that sort of thing, and you may well end up being able to get Sonar up and running with at least capability to do some projects.

The way I look at it, you have nothing to lose by trying, and the worst that will happen is that you learn about some of this stuff, which is always helpful, in the long run.

So, please review the information that all of these people have posted, and post back after running the resource monitor so we can see what you have running.
