About to install a Crucial C300 SSD as my new boot drive, re-installing Windows 7 on it, and wonder if I should go AHCI before I do so, because I hear it's too late after.

I'd go AHCI...
It's not too late after installing the OS... you just need to tweak a registy entry ("msahci" start parameter)

FYI
There used to be an understanding during the Win XP & Vista era that AHCI is bad for DAW.
Now, according to a private message from jschild to me, AHCI is the way to go with Win 7.
jschild: "must have it for win7."

My SSD installation instructions were very clear about accessing the BIOS prior to connecting the SSD (OS role) and selecting AHCI. Win 7's installation process then made the necessary adjustments automatically (trim, readyboost, superfetch/prefetch/reayboot).
