Do any of my imaginary british friends know Julian?  He and Pepe Romero are my two favorite players who are still alive.

Wow I saw that name and got excited.  IMHO the best after Segovia. I have 3 of his CDs along with 2 Pepe and one Angel. Back in the 80s Bruce Leek even recorded 2 of my classical pieces on 2 different CDs. He made me sound great. The mics he used were so sensitive I had to hold my breath till the recording started. Btw, I have the whole score of Concerto for classical guitar and jazz piano (Claude Bolling). When I toured with the Concert Band a wonderful jazz pianist named Van Zirkle performed Serenade with me. I think Brent Mckesson was on bass. Very cool!

That's awesome Bill.  I'd like to sit and hear your war stories.  I played the jazz suite in college.  Julian is just so perfect in every way.  Perfect player, but also he's not part of the egg shell crowd that engulfs the classical guitar community these days.  I wont go into it.  Julian was a jazz player before he did the classical thing.  

I remember Julian from my college days as well. As Bill said, right up there with Segovia.

I remember Julian Bream being a regular guest on UK light entertainment shows in the '70s.

I much prefer Bream to Williams myself, not as technically able perhaps but a far better tone and feel imho.  They did q. a few duets together iirc.

Oops I forgot Williams.  He's a great as well.  But I prefer Julian because he brims with excitement, sugary maybe but his performances aren't dull.  I can't say the same for a lot of other players.

I actually got to meet Sabicas once in San Antonio. He floored me! Inhuman technique. I went to his reception and spoke thru an interpreter for about 45 min. I was around 30 at the time and had only heard his name but knew nothing cept he was a world class flamenco guitarist. I thought I had a handle on practice, technical prowess, and performance preparation, etc. but I quickly realized I was a novice. Meeting him revolutionized how I approached music and all involved. Wonderful experience! He was also the first guy to ask " just how many hours everyday do you really have a guitar in your hand?" Also the first to inform me of a truly beneficial workout schedule that provided results. 

About my meeting Sabicas - In performances I found that practicing till I got things right wasn't enough. I had to practice till I couldn't get it wrong. I applied this in rehearsals as a band leader and every aspect of being an instrumentalist. It brought me to a level I couldn't have imagined years earlier and continued till I came down with cancer in 03'.
