  • What could cause new notes entered into the PRV of an existing MIDI clip not play?

This is a little weird and I'm hoping you guys could point me to whatever I'm overlooking.

I have a MIDI track feeding Addictive Drums. This is a clone of the original track that was play live into multiple takes and then comped and flattened.

In the clone I deleted all the other takes/clips and left only the flattened comp to work with.

Then I copied that clip into a new take so as I did my edits I could compare the original with my edited version.

I muted the original clip VIA Right Click > Mute/Unmute so I could use the Hide Muted Clips function in the PRV Views menu AND have that take lane muted. This is so I am only seeing the notes in the take I am editing.

When I move existing notes around to different articulations, spots on the grid or delete them the changes are audible so I know I am indeed working with the correct clip and my changes are taking effect in that instance of the PRV.

The problem is when I ENTER a new note it is not audible. I need to be able to do this to correct missed hits or do creative edits.

So I'm just hoping someone can look at that info and smack me upside the head with a "you need to do THIS, stoopid!" or "You forgot to _____, dum dum!" because I am sure it is something simple.

Thanks. ;-)

The first thing I thought of was the midi event properties. Make sure the velocity is in a good range and the note is in the drum kit piece. Routing and all that other stuff.

Hi, GM. I am inputting the notes directly onto the same line that other audible notes are occupying (it's the kick which plays throughout so it SHOULD be getting routed out to the AD kick but I'll poke around... not sure what to look for). I thought of the velocity issue and although for some odd reason the notes I think were being click written at 36vel when all the live input notes are 127 (the only velocity that is transmitted by the expression pedal I use to perform my kick parts) so I increased the velocity of the click and point input notes to 127 and there was no difference.

It's almost like when I input the notes they are writing to the muted clip and not the active one.

You know what... I'm gonna go mess around with that concept. Not sure why it would send the notes there though because the visible notes are indeed active.

BRB. Thanks.

EDIT: Well I just went back to try changing the channel of the click inputted notes in the Event Inspector but when I added a new note to try it out it registered on Channel 10 just like the other notes but STILL wasn't audible. Wow... that is really weird.

Dammit!! This should be easy!! Gonna restart Sonar and maybe reboot. Maybe the project is going wonky. BLERN!!

Okay... so in the Event Inspector Module when I click on the original notes from my live performance they are saying they are on Channel 10. The notes I input with the Smart Tool are showing Channel 1.

So why the heck is there a difference and how the *bleep* do I fix it?

I don't want to have to change the channel in the Event Inspector for every note I input. :-/

Use the interpolate function if it is still there :) You could always use Omni and freeze the drums if you don't want to midi edit, but since you have velocity issues, that is probably moot. I would look for interpolate.

Select all the notes and change them to a different channel than the one shown in the Event Inspector. Then repeat the process changing them to the channel you want to use.

While 10 is historically used for drums. I never bother to change the channel and create my drum tracks using the default values on the MIDI track. So everything always ends up on 1.

Copy your midi track to an earlier version of SONAR and use interpolate. Does X3 still support CAL? There are also some older CAL routines that may work too.

Yeah... it's gremlins apparently because now the new notes are registering as Channel 10 and still not sounding. I also specifically opened the PRV view for the clip (which I had already done but thought maybe I had screwed up so did it again) and it's still not working. Something seems to be wrong.

Annoying.

Is your track record enabled? If so, try disabling the record.

On a side note - How do you do a mass change of velocities in a single pass? I know you can drag notes in the PRV for a different kit piece, but how would you change the velocities short of drawing them in PRV?

The same way I described above to change the channel
