Is there in cakewalk 8 or later, a general midi instrument to get instruments like: trumpet, banjo, xylophone. Something like Halion Sonic Se (Cubase)

Yes. Ye olde but goode TTS-1 is a multitimbral GM soft synth..

It won't follow GM patch assignments but you will find better renditions of these instruments in Dimension Pro. You will need a seperate instance of Dim Pro for each instrument.
