Just saying - if EQ before compression is touted by many as being the best-practice for processing chain - then how come all the presets in Prochannel are set up the other way?

I always thought the position of an EQ was more a function the of the service the EQ provides. EQ early in the signal chain tends to be used for filtering, later in the in signal chain an EQ is more for shaping the sound.

If you think about what the PC is modeled after. That is a channel strip on a mixing desk, it sort of makes sense. Compression was used prior to the strip itself to control the dynamics of the signal. EQ would be used to cut out a space for other instruments, and so on.

I like compression as the last thing in the chain because I don't want the signal to clip. The use of the CA 2A is a different case and I like it as the first module.

There is no law saying you can't have what you want where you want it, though.

I also like the compression last in the chain, it lets me pull out offending frequency's that can tend be amplified by a compressor.

I know no hard and fast rules with any of this stuff  - figured there is a good reason they configured it that way..

For me, it's almost always compression then EQ. If you have your EQ before your compressor and you boost a frequency, the compressor is going to try to work on that frequency, basically turning it down. This seems counter-productive to me.

There are valid reasons for both options, depending on what you want to do. Sounds like I should write a blog post on this...

You can also create your own default project settings. If you find you are having to move your PC items around every time, create a new project template with the items where you want them.

I think this would help me for sure. Having examples of when various types of compressors could be used ahead of the eq would be great.

Cheers,
