the best thing is to clone and archive the track before bouncing or erasing takes, etc. Then it's trivial to retrieve the clips. I keep a folder of archived tracks at the bottom of every project.
"Save as" is also a good idea, especially every time a major event comes up in the process (save under the old filename before the change, then save as the new filename, then make the change), or if you decide to start using Melodyne or some unstable processor, but it's less convenient for unbouncing clips than clone/archive. Fishing stuff out of the audio folder is generally a last resort, or somewhere I would go if I want to edit a bounced wav file in another program.
