Hello,
I moved and reconnected my synth, a Motif XF8, via M-Audio Fast Track Pro, to X1 (X1d build 533).

I've tried for hours/days to get my project to play back audibly but I get silence.

I've attached photos that hopefully will help.

One thing I notice is in preferences/MIDI/Devices, the only inputs and outputs that show up are "Fast Track Pro MIDI In" under Inputs, and "Fast Track Pro MIDI Out" under Outputs.

While it's been awhile, I believe those used to give "Fast Track Pro in 1/2" and "Fast Track Pro 3/4" for input and output.

(I note however in Audio/Devices, I see "Fast Track Pro In 1/2" and Fast Track Pro In SP/PDIF under Input Devices.  Under Output Devices, I see "Fast Track Pro Out 1/2" and "Fast Track Pro Out 3/4.)

Any thoughts?

Is it possible that you plugged it into a different port?  Sometimes weird things can happen if one does that.  I have had to remove drivers and install them again, when I have used different USB ports.

Just a thought - also, make sure you have the right kind of port.  My Presonus does NOT like to be plugged into a USB 3 port - I have to use USB 2.

Bob,

Thanks.  I tried it, and indeed, I did get one channel on Preferences/MIDI/Devices to appear - "3 Fast Track Pro MIDI In".

4,1 and 2 are still not there.

Incidentally, the front of the M-Audio shows "MIDI OUT" light flashing during playback, so that works, but "MIDI IN" dark.  When I play the synth, it stays dark.

I think this means it is receiving MIDI data from Sonar but not receiving anything from the synth?

I'm going to say this even though it is too obvious.
MIDI is DATA not audio
To hear your outboard synth you need to use the audio connections.
There never would have been the audio in/out showing in the Midi options.
Your set up is showing the correct connections.

I posted while you did too so missed that last bit.

Your getting the numbers in front of the midi because you changed ports. There is only one set of midi ports on your interface, correct?

If your interface is not receiving data then your controller is not transmitting it.
Cable?
Set up in your controller?

OMG how obvious indeed.  I'm a total novice so I need obvious. :)

The synth has been connected directly to the amp (via the outputs on the synth - not the midi outputs).  The synth is audible when set for local control.

However, why isn't, or should, the midi In light lighting up on the M Audio?

Johnny Sonar - yes it would appear the Motif is not transmitting.  I use the Quick Setup in the Motif utility which has always worked and takes care of all the settings necessary to enable communication w computer and permit DAW control...

Another observation: when I depress keys on the controller/Motif, and make sure track is armed, I don't see any evidence that the DAW is receiving from the synth.

The velocity/activity meters in MIDI tracks are strictly output meters. Unlike audio tracks, arming a MIDI track does not turn the meter into a "record" (i.e. input) meter. If the track isn't playing back an existing track or echoing live input, you won't see any activity. Make sure Input Echo - button looks like: ))) - is enabled, either by having focus on the track and Always Echo Current MIDI Track is enabled in preferences, or by clicking it to force it on.

EDIT: To verify whether the interface driver is working and receiving input from the keyboard and echoing it back out, open the Windows System tray at the end of the taskbar, and enable display of SONAR's MIDI activity indicator. The left-side light is input, and the right-side is output.

Yes it does point to your Keyboard Controller is not transmitting. You'll have to dig in the manual etc.

Well fixed it simply.  I did check the synth manual and was reminded that I can directly connect synth to PC via USB.  That took care of everything.

Thanks all.
