I have a Yamaha CP300 stage piano and I have to press a button called "MIDI Out" on the piano to get it to transmit MIDI data either to the USB port or the MIDI Out connector. Since the Motif comes from the same company, maybe there is a similar switch either hardware or in a setup display on your Motif.
