  • [Solved] Install the old FX2 Tape Sim plug-in

I have decided that I would like to install the old Cakewalk FX2 Tape Sim plug-in. I believe that there was a 64-bit version available in X2(?).
I have X3 on my machine now, and don't want to screw up that install; can I just start the X2 install file and install only the FX2 Tape Sim plug? Is this possible?

If it is in the custom install list I don't see why not. Is it not included in X3? I kind of wanted to play around with that one myself but I also still have X1 and X2 still installed so I'm assuming I could still access it without a custom install but may have to hunt around and scan whatever folder it lives in.

In fact I think I'll go look for it right now.

Yes, run the x2 64bit advanced install then select the plug-ins to install.

Okay. If I right click on the FX bin and go to Audio FX > DirectX > Cakewalk it is in the list. However as I said I still have X1 and X2 installed.

Cheers.

Then yeah, definitely try the custom install. Create a restore point just in case something goes weird but it should be fine. Sorry to muddy the waters but wasn't sure if you had previous versions still installed. Sometimes the new plugin locations can cause confusion (at least they have for me... but I'm a derp). ;-)

It was dropped from X3 along with several other legacy plug-ins (ex. VC-64) and Roland products (V-Vocal and R-Mix).

I understand distancing themselves from the Roland stuff but I'm not sure why they drop other stuff that may be old but still usable. The more tools the better I say. I didn't realize they had dropped the VC64. That's probably one of the coolest, albeit a little complex, plugs of the older stuff. Glad I still have access to it. I guess maybe they figure the Nomad plugs are a little easier to navigate and are 64bit.

I asked about this myself, because I'm a big VC-64 fan. Plug-ins can be a source of instability in all programs, and especially, running old 32-bit programs in a 64-bit environment can be problematic - which is why few 64-bit DAWs also offer 32-bit support out of the box. Cakewalk has done what I feel is reasonable - dropped certain plugs from new installs, but still have them available for custom installs if you want them. After all, the FX tape sim makes a fine white noise generator
