You've got a great opening riff and gruve and a fine song overall.  I would consider maybe a B-3 instead of the synth pad.  To my ears you have a Stones vibe happening with the guitar and the synth seems to take me out of that place.

much enjoyed!

Really cool tune. Mix sounds great on cans, have to agree a tad more energy to the snare would benefit. Maybe a touch of transient designer love in the drum buss. Great tone and style on guitar. Great sounding vox

Many thanks for listening and critiquing, ohgrant. I've never used a transient designer, is the transient shaper plug-in what you're talking about? Gonna have to read up on that.

Thanks for the listen and the comment, gruverider, I would never have thought of a stones sound, but I can kinda hear what you're talking about now that you mention it. I'll give the B-3 a try and see what it does, thanks!

I would be proud of this accomplishment kevinwal...really well put together and played. I love those vocals and that guitar sits in there sounding perfectly suited for where it is . NICE!!

Thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate you taking the time to listen and to give your feedback!

Yea Kev, that's what I mean. That's assuming you are working with a stereo mix in the channel, if you have control over individual kit pieces, raising the snare volume a tad might just do the trick.
Just a hobbyist learning myself so to be taken with a grain of salt. A nice sounding kit that just needs a little more snare energy. If you've never tried a transient tool, you should. It can increase or soften the transients.
Mix is really cool otherwise IMO, I've only listened with headphones a few times. A really great headphone mix.

Thanks, I mix on headphones so yeah, it's optimized for that, lol. The family would really shoot me in the back if I mixed through monitors. I do check the mix on the monitors when I think I've got it right. I'm a hobbyist too and in my experience (since Sonar 7, really) recording and getting the mix right is harder than learning to play bass or guitar ever was, lol.

I'll monkey around with the transient shaper, but I do have control over the volume and eq of individual kit pieces so I'll try all of the above when I get home.

Sonar 7 was my first full fledged DAW too. I did spend a few years mixing mud with Guitar Tracks 2.0 clutching on to my soundblaster gaming card before the good folks here got me on track. Still lots of derailments and much to learn myself.

Great laid back groove, cool songwriting.  My nits:
  • maybe give the kick some more bottom end
  • snare is a bit flabby, not enough punch
  • I could probably do with a little less verb on the vox
Really excellent production overall.  I count this as one of the better ones on this board. :)

Thanks for the good advice and the kind words, Walt, I appreciate you giving the tune a listen. When you suggest lest verb on the vox, are you referring to the lead vocal in the verse or in the chorus, or both? They are treated a bit differently. Thanks again!

I'm listening on terrible little work computer speakers, so I'll withhold judgment on the mix (although, it sounds pretty dang good anyway!) and give it a proper listen at home this weekend.  But, the singing and songwriting are both stellar - very catchy song that is well performed.  You should definitely be proud of this one!
