Also, if I'm doing one take wonders (most of my recordings), I skip Sonar and just use RME DigiCheck to make the recording. I apply eq-compression and reverb and send the outs for headphone monitoring from the interface in virtual zero latency. If I want a metronome, I've taken to running a metronome through one of the inputs in the interface and routing it to the headphones. Then, we can just play. When I import into Sonar later I can line up the clicks on the recorded click track. I just write down the tempos as I go.
This doesn't take advantage of Sonar's ability to do comp recording (unless you record the same song repeatedly at the same tempo) or Sonar's midi synths, but it's super simple and easy to do. If you're people can really play and aren't looking to practice the same song 22 times in a row, it's a great way to make recordings.
One of the nice parts about this type of recording is there is no starting and stopping during the session.
