  • Sonar X3 Producer - can't edit piano roll, or use browser

Hi, I've just started with Sonar X3 Producer, coming from FL Studio, but I can't work out what I'm doing wrong. The Browser completely ignores any mouse clicks, it won't respond, but the rest of the program responds, and also the PRV doesn't work either - am I supposed to be using a specific tool from the top left hand corner to edit/use these windows? I've tried all of them, I thought maybe I had to turn on some sort of 'edit' mode or something, to start working?
I can open the Tutorial Projects, such as SONAR_AudioDemo, and play it back, but I can't work out how to edit the piano roll, or even choose a VST from the browser. I can insert a VST using the drop down menu Insert, Soft Synth, VST2, but when I open the piano roll I can't do anything with it - can't close it, nothing in the piano roll window responds to the mouse (but all the rest of the program does, so it hasn't frozen).
Edit: I just opened the tutorial 'Snap and Smart Grid Producer' and I can now click on the Browser while that is open, and add a VST instrument, change the Edit Filter to 'Notes', then I was able to draw on a piano roll under the audio in the playlist (?) with a magnifying glass view. If I then Alt-3 to view the piano roll, I can see the separate piano roll, with the notes I entered in the 'magnified' piano roll, but I can't do anything with it, it doesn't respond to the mouse.
I can open and close both the Browser and the Dock by pressing 'B' or 'D', but when I click on any part of them, nothing responds, can't close them by clicking on the 'x', can't select anything, can't access the menus.

What am I doing wrong? Sorry for being a newbie.

Something sounds seriously wrong there..........

Just to make sure you are actually in the PRV, select a MIDI track in the track view then press Alt+3. That should open the PRV in the multidock toward the bottom of the Track View. Press Shift+D to maximise it.
Then press F5 to make sure the smart tool is active. You should now be able to double click or click and drag to add notes.

If you get nothing doing that I would suggest trying a re-install.

Hi, many thanks for your help. I tried all of that and got the piano roll maximised, but it just won't respond. Initially there was a caret displaying in it, instead of the mouse pointer, for about ten seconds (Smart Tool was active), but either way, nothing I do in it works, it just ignores all mouse clicks, like the whole of the dock is frozen, it doesn't matter what I open in the dock part, they are always frozen, whereas the rest of Sonar works. Very strange. I will try a reinstall.

Hi, I reinstalled it, but no change. I thought I'd try the Sonar X2 trial version, just to see if that worked, but it's got the same problem! I can Alt 2, Alt 3, Alt 4, Alt 5, Alt 6 and open up the console view, piano roll, matrix and staff, and see them all, but I can't get anything within them to react to the mouse! I can press 'D' to hide them, but that's it.
I can display and hide the Browser using 'B', but again, I can't press anything in it, I can't open it or close it by clicking on its open or close arrows, etc.
But strangely enough, the Inspector works fine, in both the X2 Trial, and in X3 Producer.
Is it at all possible that something else in my system could be conflicting with some of the code? I noticed that they both installed Microsoft Visual C++ (I think), and I now have several versions of that on my PC (2005, 2005 (x64), 2008 x64, 2010 x86, 2010 x64, 2012 x64, 2012 x86, 2013 Preview, all of which were installed by various other programs I've installed in the past.

Possibly. I think the best thing you can do is contact Cakewalk Support - what you are experiencing isn't "normal" and I can't recall hearing of anything similar.

What OS are you running?

It might help to put your computer specs in your signature while you are experiencing problems, just saves lots of questions from forum users.

definitely reboot and try again.

If you have a restore point to go back to before the install, try that and reinstall.

If that doesn't work, help TS understand the expanding user base and give them a call. ;)

Sorry, I have Win 8 Professional 64 bit. What other specs do you think are useful? I'm sure it's something to do with another program I've installed.

Ditto.
If you wish to update your footer here with your specs please take a look at my footer for the general idea.
Thanks
