  • Strange behavior VST3 plugin loses settings

After working on a project for hours tweaking settings in Waves CLA plugins (VST3), I saved the project and shut Sonar down. The next morning when I opened the project, one of the plugs (the last one I was working on) had lost all of the settings I had tweaked. Spent about 15 minutes trying to recreate the original settings from last night but became frustrated. I closed the project without saving and re-opened it. ALL the settings were back!

Has anyone else experienced this behavior? Any ideas what happened?

FYI: Sonar X3d, latest Waves update, i5 3.gHz, 12GB, 500GB OS drive, 1TB audio drive, Win7 64bit.

If I create some modified sound for a VST instrument, I save it.  I have had Kontakt multi-racks disappear after a reload of Sonar, and ever since then saving presets seems to work for me.

I haven't lost anything since then.

That doesn't fix anything you may have lost, but perhaps it will help you moving forward.

Thanks Bob, this was with a VST3 plug, not an instrument. And after I reloaded the project without saving, the settings were back. Apparently the settings were there, just not loaded when I first opened the project. (this seems buggy to me) It will be a REAL pita to have to save presets for every plugin on every track and bus in every project. There will be thousands of saved presets, a file management nightmare. I have never seen this behavior before, but I have seen a few posts about settings going back to defaults. I wonder if the bakers are looking at this.
Is saving all plugin presets normal workflow?

Well it's Waves plugin, suggest having a look for updates on their site.
Unless you did a VST reset(which is strongly recommended if you've upgraded to X3D), not just a rescan, Sonar will not have resetted the settings for this plugin.

Maybe your issue is that you didn't perform a reset after X3D anyway:

Thanks Alex,
I'm running the latest Waves, R9v14. Yes, they just released v15 today with AAX support, but I haven't seen what else may have been fixed yet.

I have rescanned VSTs after the X3d update. In fact, I have it set to "manual scan" and I rescan after installing/updating any plugins. (Which I've done several times during the 'Holiday Sales season') I did not do a rescan between saving the project and opening it again the next morning.

I've been using Sonar for about 5 years and never had this happen before. In this project, I have 3 instances of the same CLA plug (on separate tracks) and another instance of a different CLA plug (on a different track). The other three instances all had their settings intact. Only one instance lost my settings and reverted back to defaults. But, after reloading the project ALL of my settings were restored.

So, the settings were saved there in the project, but they did not load properly when I first opened the project.

I have rescanned VSTs after the X3d update.

Nope RESET, then rescan. #4. Thanks.

Alex, I think I did the reset & rescan when X3d was released. I know I have done it since X3 a couple of times as I've added some Waves plugs and the new ones won't show up unless you do a reset & rescan. Should I be resetting every time I install/update any VSTs?
It just seems odd that 3 other instances of the same or similar plugs kept their settings, while one was reset to default parameters. AND they all came back with the next re-load of the project.

Just do a reset just after install of X3D. The last post you mentioned "rescan"/"scan" four times but not reset at all, so clearly it seemed to me like you hadn't done this, thanks for confirming.

Anyway I have no idea, other than I strongly suspect the plugins themselves. Sorry.

Oh you might consider moving the folder away from C:\Program Files as sometimes plugins require admin permissions as they've been incorrectly coded (Dimension Pro is a classic example). If you move your plugins away from this, it will no longer be the case.

All my plugins are under D:\Plugins for instance.

"Nope reset just after install of X3D"

...and after installing new Waves plugins.
