I am trying to play a project.  There is noting unusual about it.  Most of the soft synths are frozen.  It is not a dense project.  CPU usage is low (way under 10%).  Memory shows about 5.5GB used out of 12GB (which is pretty standard when using soft synths).  I am running X1d in 64 bit.  No other applications are running.  ASIO buffer is set on 1024 samples.

The project will play a moment, and the stop and the audio engine shows that the audio has stopped.  I hit play and the music goes for a few bars and stops again.

Ideas?

Hallo, Konrad.  What are your I/O buffers set to?  Just a thought..

Hey, man.  Not sure what this means, but in Preferences | Driver Settings, I see Input = 522 samples, Output = 752 samples, and Roundtrip=1274 samples.  Is that good or bad?

By the way, this problem eventually goes away, but it is quite upsetting when I am trying to work.  Also, things shouldn't just break randomly. :-)

Thanks for helping.

Hm, you've obviously been using this setup for awhile, so the first question is, has anything changed recently (in the setup)?  New or updated software?  Hardware?

I'd first try to determine if the problem is with your system or isolated to this project...  Close and restart Sonar, then open another project (or two).  If no problems there, then the issue is with the first project and you can troubleshoot from there.

You might try adjusting the Playback I/O Buffer size and the Record I/O Buffer size, perhaps set them to 512 k each.

Those settings are in Preferences>Audio>Sync and Caching

What sample rate are you using konradh?

I get the same problem while recording.  It started after installing X3c.  The problem goes away after a couple of stops.  I'll try increasing the buffer sizes.

Sorry, Konrad, I should have been more specific, it was late last night and I was half asleep.

I meant your Playback I/O Buffer Size and  Record I/O Buffer Size.  You'll find them in Edit>Preferences>Audio>Sync and Caching  (you may need to click the "Advanced Button" at bottom of Prefs window to see it).  Craig Anderton posted a thread on here recently, saying that the default used to be 512, but has changed to 256.  It may be worth increasing yours to see if it helps.

HTH, sorry to be a bit vague last night.

If you are seeing this randomly occur, then just as randomly the problem goes away, I would check for any update services or AV scanner that might be hitting your hard drives. I've seen it with Java, Quicktime and Windows Updates, until I disabled them all...

Dan

I've been having to pause Gobbler or it pegs my drive causing drop outs.

I believe this is because I have two or three hour live recordings I mix in a single project.

Using the gentle setting in Gobbler, but I still have to pause it when I'm in sonar. I don't know if I need to remove pause when I close, but I do.
