I have copy and pasted this from another forum but have EXACTLY the same problem.... Anyone else come across this? It's a major PITA if you have a lot of instances open.

Sometimes when I load Kontakt into Sonar X3, the sound distorts and glitches. It doesn't happen all the time. Sometimes it will happen in a brand new project. Sometimes it will happen in an existing project I'm loading up.

I can remove the distorting effect by removing the sounds from Kontakt and reloading them from their libraries after which they will play fine. If I exit X3 and start it again, I may at random hear the distort/glitch effects again and once again removing and reloading the sound libraries will fix it for that session.

It always happens immediately on starting/loading a project. It never creeps in during a session.

I normally use a buch of instances of Kontakt in each project I do but I've not come across this problem.

Which libraries are you loading?

Various really but at the moment it seems to be happening in the actual kontakt library (the Vsl stuff) and the Blakus cello. It hasn't happened on LA scoring strings which I use most.

The only issues with distortion I've had with Kontakt are when the internal patches and mixer get overloaded before it reaches SONAR's output. Some patches clip, and some clip Kontakt's internal mixer.

MIDI Playback and Recording -> Prepare Using X Buffers. Maybe increase (or decrease) X?
Cheers...

Wizard,

I have seen the same behavior. That is, the samples start to sound distorted and are breaking up.  Sounds terrible.  In my case, though, I attributed the problem to a plug in inserted in the FX bin of the offending KONTAKT output audio track.

I simply turn the VST effect off and then back on, and the distorted disappears.  Since, this work around exists, I never contemplated that KONTAKT itself might be causing the audio distortion of the samples? I will keep on eye on this and if I have anything else to add, I will post here.

Are you using Kontakt 5.3? I was having some "mysterious" issues that disappeared once I updated.

Thanks everyone, have tried all suggestions and thanks to Jim I've identified it as an fx problem. Essentially a kontakt convolution reverb on the Blakus cello and the reverbs in the presets in the kontakt factory library VSL orchestral stuff. Whether these are also convolution I don't know but if I reload the reverbs on all affected instruments then all is well, which is still a PITA but at least I know the problem now. The solution is another matter.
Am also using LA scoring strings as mentioned before plus galaxy D piano and these, although playing through Kontakt never exhibit a problem.

Dunno what it is about me and Kontakt, any more than 3 instances and my Octacapture driver crashes on project startup if I am using ASIO which means WDM/KS is my only option. I can only hope that Roland someday fix it.

Wiz,

I find it interesting that the workaround for the KONTAKT distortion (that is, turn the FX off and then back on) is the same workaround that works when the UAD plugins stop working completely.  I think there was some type of change in X3 on the flow and interface to effects that might have been introduced by the bakers (I think it was changed to comply with some other protocol they introduced), problem being the third party guys aren't following the same protocol.

Who knows, maybe just a coincidence.
