I'm new around here, just bought Sonar X3 Studio because I fell in love with the audio engine and the Pro Channel architecture. I actually sat down, mixed the same tune on different DAWs and fed the files to my colleagues. Almost all of them preferred Sonar.
Anyway
 
I really loved the sound of the Pro Channel compressor (forgive me can't recall the name, I think it should be a 1176 emulation) you find in Sonar Producer edition. I understood you could buy Pro Channel single FXs from the website so I got myself Sonar X3 Studio and went to buy the Pro Channel Module, but couldn't find it anywhere on Cakewalk's website.
Hence the question:
 
Is it possible to buy it as a single? I don't care for tape emulation, virtual consoles, all the extra bits and bobs but THAT compressor was one of the reasons I bought Sonar X3 in the first place.

It's a bit of a shame - If I could make a new year's wish that'd be Cakewalk selling that sweet compressor as a single download.
The CA2A looks nice. I might give it a try. Not sure it's exactly the same thing (no variable ratio, etc...) Maybe the PC4K?

The CA2A is a La2A clone - an optical compressor.  The Cake version is very nice.
 
All the PC4K modules are SSL clones.  The bus compressor is, to my ears, really great.
 
The 1176 module doesn't come as a VST, I think.  But the SSL bus comp and 1176 come w/ SONAR Producer.  A good reason to upgrade.  However, there are a bunch of 1176 VSTs out there.  Softube makes one I use instead of Cake's - it is part of their MIx bundle that is adapted for the PC but you can use it as a VST.  There are plenty others out there, including some free ones.
 
If it was me, the SONAR Pro would be the most cost-effective route.  You get a good track comp w/ the 1176, a great bus comp w/ the SSL, and a great EQ on every kind of track.  And the Prochannel itself, which is part of the inspector, is a great methodolgy to keep track of your channel effects.  I seldom step outside the PC, even for delay, which I now have w/ the overloud keyboard fx bundle.  There are other reasons to upgrade to Pro, but the PC is a great one.

Hehe, of all compressors included, I like the 1176 least. Just goes to show there's no accounting for taste. I really like the Waves Classic Compressors which includes an 1176 (two versions, actually), but you missed the post Thanksgiving sale for that bundle. Stillwell's "The Rocket" is a popular 1176 style comp, though not entirely "vintage emulation" I think. It's about 50 bucks.

Neither option will get you the ProChannel interface if that's what you're looking for. It's not for me, but many people on here swear by it. The CA2A by Cake is an entirely different type of compressor, but it's great none the less. PC or VST, either way.

+1 on the CA-2A.  It'll get the job done, and I bet you'll like the simplicity of it.

On Monday I would give Sales a call and see what they can do about moving you to the Producer version. You could try today too. But as far as I know there are PC modules and plugins that are only available with the Producer version.

+1 on the CA-2A.  It'll get the job done, and I bet you'll like the simplicity of it.

I pretty much stopped using the 1176-type compressor since getting the CA-2A. It's outstanding with vocals.

Second this statement! The CA-2A is used often here on vocals among other things. Love this plug.

One of the tests I'd like to do at some stage this year is CA-2A vs Native Instruments VC-2A. Pity though I don't have the actual compressor. I read somewhere on these threads the emulation was a little suspect with CA-2A compared to the real thing, although that only matters to purists.
