It sure would be nice if someone could offer a basic outline of which videos in cakewalk university one should watch and in what order.  For a newbie it is kind of overwhelming.  Would also be nice to have a video that takes one through a first time creation of a song from beginning to end.  I know the X3 package is for professionals but I bet I'm not the only hobbyist that has bought more than he knows how to handle and use.

Start with the tutorials in the help files. As you have questions look for a video about the subject.

If you want to be babyspooned, i.e. have a process to follow from start to finish I suggest you should check out something like:

Scott Garigus's Sonar Power books are sequential with a beginning and an end.

For me, I always learned what was immediately practical.

Thanks for the mention, Geoff!

Earl... my SONAR X3 Power! book is in the works. In the meantime, the tutorials in the SONAR Help should get you going on your first project.

Best,
Scott

Ha! Thanks, Alex! I wish I was SuperMan. I could type out the book in about 30 seconds.

ekurburski,

Two recommendations I'll make. Groove 3 tutorials on SonarX3 - there are two of them. With the Holiday20 offer from Cakewalk in the Cakewalk store you could probably obtain them for next to nothing if you hurry and take advantage of the Cakewalk promo. Eli is fantastic as a teacher. You'll run across his material on many subjects. This set of tutorials ( hours long) walk you through visually and with narrative about the features and menus. Great for getting your bearings.

Then there's a really interesting Groove 3 video (also avail in the Cakewalk store) called Mixing With Sonar X1. The tutorial walks through a song end to end. It's excellent! It also is really close to X3 in the feature set covered. There have been new things introduced in X2 and X3 of course, but 90 percent of the current program is covered in this tutorial. It's very cool.

On an additional note, I consume literally every bit of training I come across. Every presentation helps, from Scott's book, Bill's new book on Sonar Power, and including the material on Cakewalk University. For two staring points, I think the ones I mentioned from Groove 3 will really help you get out of the gate in an organized way.

Groove3's X3 Explained is a great deal and a lot of information. It's on sale ATM, too.

You're  not the only hobbyist on here, not by a long shot.

ekurburski,

If you're new to Sonar X series, I'd start with the Get Started series of videos as these cover the basics.. Most specifically look at videos like Audio Configuration, MIDI Device Setup, Plugin Manager, etc. These types of videos will get you a fundamental understanding of how Sonar X series works. I'd start at the bottom of the page and work up into videos on more specific tasks like X2 Quick Grouping, X2 Metronome, etc.

This should get you started.

Best of luck and most of all, have fun!!

P.S. I have and still use the Mixing With Sonar X1 video that Lawajava mentioned. Excellent video! Highly recommend when you reach that stage. Just don't get ahead of yourself and become over whelmed! lol
