• SONAR
  • Audio bit depth - anyone seeing anything funny?

Just putting this out there.

Has anyone seen mixed bit depth in any of their projects? My defaults have always been 24/48k for audio. I have seen occasion when saving to bundle files that SONAR is reporting a writing of 16-bit audio too. The only time I use 16-bit is for Exporting MP3 files. I would not think that SONAR would save an exported mp3 file as part of the project.

So, has anyone seen mixed bit rates in any projects and wonder about that?

With the patches seemingly reestablishing default settings at times, I am wondering why SONAR can't remember it's own settings designated by the user when applying updates or if that is even the case here..

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think SONAR can even have mixed bit depths in a single project. Everything gets converted to 32-bit float, regardless of its original format and regardless of whether it originated from the audio interface, a software synthesizer, a sample library, or an external file.

You can, of course, export individual files or full mixes in any format you like, but that's a conversion that happens on export and doesn't affect the existing files within the project.

I believe SONAR can have files at different bit depths. At least that is how I read "Import Bit Depth" (from the Preferences Dialog help page http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation/default.aspx?Doc=SONAR%20X3&Lang=EN&Req=Dialogs2.063.html):
Import Bit Depth Use this field to choose the bit depth that imported audio will use. The default choice of Original keeps the imported audio at its current bit depth

I have been doing projects with mixed bit depths since maybe Sonar 8? Why? Well, I always record 44/24 but will often get recordings from others who accidentally recorded at 16. I have things set to import as they are so end up with audio files of 16 and 24.

easy to confirm, just look at the file properties - not at my comp atm or I'd check

CW has been touting this ability for awhile now.

Not necessarily. It depends on what your import properties are set to. you can also have multiple bit rayes in a single project. You just cannot have multiple sample rates in a single project.
