1) add modifier to alt-click such as ctrl-alt-click to give discrete lane splitting with fast access to this tool

I have't followed the whole thread, and maybe I'm misunderstanding the meaning of "discrete", but doesn't alt+click already let you split anywhere you want without affecting other lanes (my interpretation of "discrete")?

KeniI'm finding that it is possible to do and only a tad more cumbersome than it was... It took some investigation, complaining, and pointers /ideas from a number of people..

The short of it?

Use the actual split tool and it allows you to split discrete lanes
Use the K key to un mute overlapping clips and edit fades

Then all the other tools become helpful additives as you will find I'm sure...

I found that once I use F8 and cycle it go the split tool, I can simply return to the smart tool and back with a single F5<>F8...

Keni

Thanks for the pointers!

I'll try my hand at editing in X3 when time permits again.
I'm at the point that I'd pay to see this done.  I'm so frustrated not being able to successfully edit multi-miced instruments that need to be time-edited in X2/X3.  I'm sure it's user-error and having done it a certain way for so long.

Anywho, thanks!

I completely agree. A perfect gift for Drum Month would be such a video.  I have yet to find a good work flow for real drums.  Little things like the mini-breaks between clips and its effect on crossfades that someone else mentioned is a great example of the kind of issues that come up.  I would love to see this done efficiently so I can learn some tips.

As far as I can tell, there are exactly the same kind of issues that I deal with when using hex guitar. I'll be doing a fair amount of hex work in the next month or two and will collect tips about what does work, as well as how to deal with what doesn't work.

That was me :)
I run across this all the time, and can't afford to waste time in front of clients.  This is actually one of the MAIN situations that keep me tracking on X1.  Track layer slip-editing is just easier and quicker.  And my clients notice how efficient I am (or the process is).  These little gaps that don't allow crossfades kill time and kill my session's vibe.

I have't followed the whole thread, and maybe I'm misunderstanding the meaning of "discrete", but doesn't alt+click already let you split anywhere you want without affecting other lanes (my interpretation of "discrete")?

Yeah, this is confusing me too. I can already split clips on individual lanes using only alt+click or the s key, or I can split all lanes at once by doing it on the master track.

Interesting...

How are you doing that? when I use alt-click it splits the clips on all lanes at that location... I must change to the split tool of use a shortcut that calls the split dialog to  do this...

Discrete? Meaning only one lane, not all the lanes on the track...

Not here...

If I use alt-click it splits all the lanes on that track...

I now use the split tool via F8 to do this
then return to smart tool via F5
select the overlapping clip and use K to unmute it (ctrl-click splits it on all lanes)
draw my fades...

Much appreciated.
