Just curious if anyone else thinks she may have ticked off the monitor mix crew?

Yeah, they are supposed to be professionals but I have seen many signs posted around various touring monitor mixers that say something like 'if you complain you get nothing'. This was just the first thing that came to my mind when I heard about her troubles.

Not that I care much (if any) about Mariah Carey...

The only Mariah I know about is the wind.

Honestly, and I do not think that this should EVER be done to anyone on the stage, which makes many of us look like idiots and not professionals, I do believe that some of these folks are not as good as they think they are, and they need to be exposed.

I kinda think that Mariah's voice is cracked, and that she needs help to sound good, and in my view of things, she should start protecting her ability to sing, and stop being a part of these moronic exercises in "fame". However, she is not the only one using those kinds of systems to sound "better", and I find it really strange that many years ago, we had two guys punished for this, and today, some famous somebody, can do the same thing ... and get away with it and no one gives a damn.

So sorry ... blame or not, she is not professional enough to handle it on her own!

I have no doubt that Mariah has been torpedoed.

It's funny how much power the mix crew has.
I've mixed a few rock/pop shows, and the musicans are really friendly (they want me to help them sound as good as possible).  I've also mixed a few choral singers and ensembles.  They tended to see the sound tech as "hired help" and were snobby and dismissive.  Probably by not always relying on a PA system for performances, they didn't realize the power I had to mess them around.  I didn't, but it was a huge divide in how that power is recognized.

As for Mariah herself, I haven't heard of her doing anything in a long time.  Maybe she's just lost it?  It happens...

I have definitely seen bands torpedoed by FOH staff. Usually it's the opening act, when the headliners are using their own people. Far more often, though, it's unintentional. A combination of incompetence and inadequate time for a proper equipment/sound check.

In this particular case, it was malfunctioning IEMs. I'm surprised that an A-lister like MC doesn't have her own tech on hand and her own gear. Apparently, it was a last-minute booking and she put too much faith in the production company, who after all has been doing this gig for 25 years and should have had most details ironed out by now. Certainly something as fundamental as stage monitoring.

The production company tried to blame the artist, saying she skipped the sound check. That wasn't true. She skipped the dance numbers during rehearsal but was there for the vocals - and complained about the IEMs then. The crew should have set up floor wedges as a backup.

Wasn't there also a CD playing in the background (on this "live" performance)?

Yes, she was supposed to sing live over a karaoke mix. That's standard practice for live TV.  But given the noise levels at such an event, even that would be impossible without functioning in-ears.

They should have booked Britney Spears or Justin Bieber. It would have gone off without a hitch.
