um...what's a middle button???

On my HP mouse, you just press the scroll button and that changes how it operates.

I was just joking.  Haven't seen a true 'middle button' since scroll wheels became standard...

 
 
But there are now gaming mice with eleventy programmable buttons for those with the need! 

Anyone using a trackball? Been thinking about maybe trying one again, especially for the DAW. I thought they had went the way of the condor, but it looks like they have stuck around. Most of the users seem to be using them on detail, intricate software (photoshop, CAD). Thinking it may be suited for DAW work.

I've got a Logitech M570, but can't seem to become comfortable with using my thumb on the trackball.

Actually the MX Anywhere is the only mouse I found which fulfills my criteria of having thumb operated back/forward navigation buttons on the side as well as a dedicated middle button.

That's an interesting find!  It appears that Logitech put the scroll mode switch in that MX model under the scroll wheel, then moved the 3rd button to just behind the scroll wheel, where the scroll mode button is located on the Marathon.  Nice switcharoo!

I don't know why they don't do that on all of their mice. Having to click the scroll wheel for a middle button is horrible, the damn wheel moves when you click it.

I've never understood why the gaming aesthetic has to be so ugly. That thing looks hideous! 

I just replaced a Logitech MK710 keyboard/MK705 mouse with the same thing. I had literally worn several letters off the original keyboard and polished most of the rest. The thing about the marathon mouse I cannot live without is the brass mouse wheel. Six years later it is the same thing (just cheaper to buy now). I work with large documents (100+ pages) a lot and cannot take "slow scrolling." When that wheel ratchet is disengaged, documents will scroll as fast as the graphics will tolerate (20+ pages per second). That particular mouse has 5 buttons as it is (three on the thumb), so I have never had "need" for a middle button (Win7 supports 5 buttons without installing mouse-specific drivers as well, not sure about Win10). That particular point is of interest to some, as I have seen issues reported from the Logitech (SetPoint) drivers in the past.

I am running Windows 10 with the M705 Marathon as a default HID-compliant mouse. In the Microsoft control panel I only see 2 buttons available.
 
So far I have avoided the Logitech SetPoint software, as the MS mouse drivers are working trouble free, but I am curious about the third thumb button thingy...
