  • Cannot edit clip envelopes for all overlapping clips in a multi-clip audio track

I have had an issue that has been driving me insane.  While trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong, I came across this thread:

Please tell me there is a fix for this, and point me to it!

I guess I can't post links yet, so let me describe my issue.

I am recording a vocal track with three part harmony.  Instead of using separate tracks for each part, I want to have a layered, multi-clip track.

Obviously since its a vocal harmony, the clips have to overlap.

I record each clip.

Now I want to pan the clips to give it more presence, and adjust gain on certain parts.

Problem is, it will only let me adjust the envelope of just one clip.  For me, usually the one on the bottom layer.

Why??  This only happens if the clips overlap in time.  If I have multiple clips that do not overlap in time, there's no issue.

HELP!!  This is apparently not a new issue, and I refuse to believe that after YEARS, there is no fix.  There has to be, I just don't know what it is.

Not sure if what you describe is a bug or not. But why not just record harmonies to different tracks for full independent control?

What's the ID# in the URL of the thread you wanted to link? I just tried it with indepedent clip gain and panning of three sound-on-sound audio clips in lanes in X3d, and can't reproduce an issue. When you say you "can't adjust" the envelopes do you mean you can't move the nodes, or the shape of one envelope audibly dominates the others?

I agree.

Whilst I don't normally question anyone's workflow, you will have MUCH better control and available options if your harmony tracks are literally that - tracks

The way the new Take Lanes are implemented means you're probably operating in Comp mode which, if my understanding is correct, will actually prevent you from doing what you want.
