  • Some say music making is a hobby, but what are your hobbys? (p.2)

That's a lesson I took a long time to learn - that I needed to do things besides music - and I ruined a couple of relationships in the process. That being said, the fact that my wife is a professional musician certainly helps us find a balance.

I guess my main thing besides music is books - religion (especially Judaism), philosophy, psychology, languages and death. Anything by Nietzsche. And classic literature.

My home studio doubles up as a study room, once I'm done recording late at night.  Put on some classical music, pour a glass of wine, get some olives, a book and I'm good for hours...

I've always been a bookworm, usually reading 4 or 5 books at once. Right now, I've just started Dickens' Great Expectations, I'm in the middle of my Jewish study bible and a couple of books about Jewish high holidays, I'm reading one called Dictionnaire de la Mort (dictionary of death) and another one titled Funerals to Die For.

Oh, and Marus Aurelius' Meditations.

We also seem to be collecting cats. But that's a different story...

Cats are great. Seems like you have a good balance. Im not a book reader myself, I watch the movie instead.

I've just rediscovered the joys of cycling. I use public transport a lot in New York and between the whole inefficient slowness of it all and the stinking bums and weirdos you have to put up with, I'm pretty sick of it. I never wanted to own a bike in NYC because they take up valuable apartment space, you have to carry a big chain and lock around and even then they get stolen all the time. So I bought myself an annual pass for the bike sharing scheme. There's a docking station right by my building and I just insert my CitiBike key into a dock and away we go. You get 45 minutes per ride before you have to dock and take out a new bike, but that's more than enough for me to get around Manhattan.

I know it sounds crazy but I'd forgotten how much fun city cycling can be. I don't mind the traffic, it feels good to weave in and out of stationary cars on a bike, it's very satisfying to leave those chumps behind in the jam. Of course you have to have your wits about you what with psychotic taxi drivers, dump truck maniacs and a general culture of outright looniness on New York roads, but as long as you remain focused it's OK. I love the general camaraderie of road users yelling abuse and insults at each other. There's nothing better than riding up alongside a taxi that's just cut you off and politely inquiring as to whether or not the operator of said vehicle even has a frigging drivers license, and if so, how drunk must his examiner had to have been on the day

to busy making music , I go to work for some hours and most of the times
it helps out .

A few years ago I started sailing. Now it's as big a passion as music, taking up 3-4 nights a week and quite a few weekends. Now I only have time for music during the winter.

Due to the climate where I live, my hobbies are seasonal. In the spring, summer and fall, it's golf, boating and messing around with a couple of collector vehicles. I have a 63 Chevy Pickup and just picked up a 96 Camaro Z28 convertible. It's a wolf in sheeps clothing, with a 5.7 LT1 V8 and has all kinds of upgrades and modifications to the engine. My mechanic estimates it's pushing around 400 horsepower.

In the winter, it's woodworking and learning to fly an F15C Eagle on a simulator program designed by American and Russian enthusiasts. Wicked learning curve as the flight model is very accurate. I can fly online against Russian pilots flying MIGS of various vintage as part of a team or solo. A serious time sucker, but a real blast.

I've been into astronomy since I was a little kid. The same goes for photography. The only music credits I've ever had were for cover photo's. I wish I had the flight sim Randy is talking about. I could be all over that.
