  • Freezing / unfreezing resets guitar rig, TH2- sometimes can't unfreeze

My standard process is to record guitar parts, drums, bass etc. Then I freeze the all tracks to optimize cpu for recording vocal tracks.  When I go to mix, I unfreeze all the tracks. I use guitar rig 5 and TH2 mostly. Recently I noticed when I unfreeze a track, the guitar rig setting are reset to basically nothing. meaning, when I recorded the track I had the knobs in the guitar rig set to various settings, when I unfreeze, all the knobs are set to zero. And I have also noticed on a couple of projects, I have a few traks that I can't seem to unfreeze.  I have been in the habit of making backups as I go, so I am able to load tracks from backups if needed, however its a pain. Has anyone else experienced this? any ideas why these 2 things would happen or how to fix them?

Apparently the Guitar Rig problem is a known issue. The solution is to be sure to save your settings before freezing then reload them after unfreezing. Not sure why TH2 is doing that to you but I've never freezed it. It's supposedly low resource so it may not interfere with your tracking however if it is persistent what you could do is simply mix down what you have into a new track and archive everything else (which will take the load off your system. Then you can do your vocal tracks and un-archive the original tracks when you are redy to go back into mix/edit mode. Cheers.

Also with GR you could turn off the "HI" samplerate setting if you need to turn down your buffers for tracking. You should have enough power to get away with quite a few instances without trouble.

now that you mention it, I have only noticed it in guitar rig. TH2 has not done this.

have you ever been unable to "unfreeze" a track (yes that is a double negative).  lol.  :)

Yeah, Markyzno helpfully pointed it out the other day and I'm really glad he did. If I had stumbled across that by accident I would have been SUPER pissed... especially considering when I do actually use GR I tend to spend a loooooong time getting it sounding right.

I've never actually had the need to freeze anything on my system yet. It's pretty powerful and I optimized it. The only problem I've really had was recently with my read/write cache on a track that had like 50 audio tracks on it. However I do all my tracking very early on with only the FX I absolutely need like the amp sim. I've seen others mention problems with unfreeze so when I felt I should do something to free up some resources I've bounce to track and archived the originals.

when you say "archived", is that sonar function or are you just cloning tracks and muting them?

On each track by the MSR buttons (Mute, Solo, Record) there is a button with a big "A" on it. That is the "Archive" button and it basically takes the the audio, effects and everything else out of the project for all practical purposes (without actually deleting or removing them so you can click the button again and revert them back to being audible/editable/etc). It's very handy for taking unnecessary load of the system. I use it for all my scratch tracks and tracks that are loaded down with takes that I've bounced to my working copy so I can go back to the originals if need be. There is also and option in the track manager to hide all archived tracks so you can make them all disappear from the track list/console with one action. It is a very nice feature.

Also I hope you've been well, Tracey. Haven't seen you in a while. Cheers and HNY.
