  • X3D update - Why can't patches remember settings already set??

It would surely be nice if SONAR could remember default settings and enable those options in the patch upgrade so you just have to press OK.

Does SONAR NOT know the settings already? SONAR surely does not query the settings and report them on the patch update process... I am curious why you have to set these option on every patch update. I choose the same options every time I update with a patch.

Some things it does remember, others it does not.  What setting are you having issues with in particular?

The bakers need to update some of the information if they have added new variables or new defaults to something.  A lot of patches deal with issues in templates so they are often updated.  If they have over-written a template it is probably best to reconfigure it instead of having some uninitialized value in your next project (although it would be nice to see what changed in the release notes).

This is not a major deal, but these would be nice to remember - default file type associations and directories.

I don't know of any other reason for verifying the directories. Unless there is new product coming into play, the product and plugin install directories should remain the same. IF there is going to be a complete install, then specifying the install and default directories would make sense to respecify. As far as I have seen, a patch does not really do a full install and specifying something else that what the original install would likely hose up the product/plugin execution.

A patch is a process to update an existing set of code and should use what is default and outlined with the original install.

Not sure what you mean.

I think I did pretty good in subsequent posts explaining. Basically, patches go through several confirmation panels and I really don't think that the patches need to if SONAR remembered what was installed, set as default, etc...

A patch should update and not really have to ask you about directory placement and default settings if you have already set them.

My post came two minutes after yours and I hadn't read the last post (first post was pretty meaningless).
So when X3D is installed it prompts for information such as file associations etc and you are saying this should not be necessary.

I totally agree:

When you upgrade, doesn't Sonar ask to migrate old settings to the new patch?  It does for me, and I've never had the problem you are reporting.  Or, are you talking about something different?

I can't really argue with this. I want to but unfortunately it makes perfect sense to me. Nuts!!!! Ba humbug!
