  • does anyone else find the "SMART GRID" a little bit dumb (p.2)

I look at the smart tool the way i look at automated features with video or photography.  They are ok when they work, but any photographer or videographer knows that relying on a machine to think for you is a bad idea.  The smart tool is supposed to be a shortcut that anticipates your needs as far as tools, saving you the extra second to click on the right tool or the extra mili-second it takes to hit a keyboard shortcut.  I don't get any more upset when the smart tool does not quite nail it any more than I get mad when the autofocus on my camera gets confused by a fence or cage bars at a zoo.  I just switch to the tool I wanted.

Not talking about the smart tool!

This isn't a simple question of it not working for me. ...its that we don't have a grid to edit to that works. This isn't auto focus...this is a DAW. if you do this for a living, and do lots of pop rock, simply having a grid that works is a huge help.
Do you need it set to 128th notes while your editing drums...I doubt it very much.
Its a feature that whether we like it or not we paid for, and most people don't use it as is. Why. .. because its almost useless! !!!!

I don't want it thinking for me! I want it to do what just about every other DAW does as a basic starting point.
Again, I really like Sonar, but I'm tired of trying to edit a pop track to a grid and only having quater notes to use as a visual visual reference.

Does this not make sense to anyone else but me? Can anyone else send in a feature request?

but... the normal snap works as it should as does the Smart Grid. We didn't pay for what you are asking for. We paid for what they put out. It's an extra that is available for you to use or not. Being able to have more control over it would be a nice touch but as it is it doesn't hinder anything.

I'm sorry... this isn't the travesty you are making it out to be. Just put in a feature request.

revsnd, you do know you can disable the Smart Grid by right-clicking the global resolution setting and clicking to uncheck Smart Grid, right?

Yes Brundlefly, I like most, always have the smart grid disabled. And yes the normal snap works as expected perfectly.
Snap is not the problem. Editing to a grid that has next to zero options is the problem.
To give it some perspective, a close friend of mine was a rep for Roland and put me in contact with a few people at Calkwalk who use Protools to edit to the grid.
One said the grid kinda sucks, the other two were a little more diplomatic in their respones but agreed that it has never been that good. All of them shall remain nameless.
I don't care how they implement a grid ie.using smart grid or doing something like Protools.
Again, the only option with the smart grid disabled, is quarter note grid. If you want to line up a bunch of tracks to a 16th note, you have to change your snap value to 16th note and use your now time aim assist to see where everything should be lined up to.

The best case scenario would probably be to just give us an option to have the grid at whatever value we need, and have it always shown (just as the quarter note one is now)
That way we could have snap disabled and and still be able to see the grid.

Since the PRV has a user-definable grid, I guess we're talking about displaying grid lines in the Track View...? This used to be easier, but can still be done:

- Set and Audio Track's Edit Filter to Transients (this is temporary just to get access to the Transient tool context menu).
- Right-click in the track and choose Pool > Add MBT to Pool.
- You'll get timeline markers and grid lines in the clips pane at snap resolution.

I've filed a problem report that the resolution of the lines does not update with snap changes until you zoom the timeline. And snap has to be enabled for the lines to display, but you can set magnetic strength very low if you don't actually want things to snap.

It would be wonderful if the track view grid worked more like the PRV grid. In your response, do you see the hoops we have to jump through for something as simple as a user definable grid resolution like the PRV.
We should all just put in a feature request for a better TV grid

Personally, I'm very happy with the methodology of the normal snap and grid.... If we could just have a version where everything is working as expected, eh? ;-)

I still frequently find the grid not changing, or the PRV snap incapable of enable... Or of the grid not changing when the snap is changed... Nothing that I can bug report, but constant issues...

I typically have my TV snap set move by measure and my PRV snap set to move to 16th.... This covers most of my needs and I don't need/want it changed when I change zooms.... Then I adjust the snap when situation requires it.... Not a problem...

I'm not sure what the OP is fervently referring to as my earlier experiences with PT and MIDI were horrendous.... I'm told it's much better in 11, but I have not seen or experienced that yet...

I'm wondering what magic they perform that makes it so much better in some eyes? My info has been even from most PT users that the MIDI is not good/easy to work with... I have an easy time with MIDI in Sonar and always have... I find the MIDI implementation to be quite excellent when bugs aren't present...

Im not thinking of jumping ship for 1 feature that protools does does well. In general I am quite happy with Calkwalk.
I'm also not talking about protools midi...just the ability to have the grid show what I want it to show(like the PRV). Instead of just quarter maybe a drop down menu with some options.
