I have used Sonar LE 8.5 in a limited capacity but just purchased Sonar X3 and really want to dive into it. I am wondering if the SONAR X2 Power! Guidebook is a good starting place for an education on X3. I am aware that the X3 Power! Guidebook is probably months away and did not want to wait for it.

Hi Charlie,

Thanks for asking about my book. Yes, you can start with X2 book, if you'd like. It just won't include any of the new features or changes for X3.

SONAR X3 Power! is currently in the works.

Thanks!
Scott

PS. Thanks, Alex!

I started with a very similar book (covered more or less the same topics in more or less the same order) and made the transition into X3 very easily. Of course, I had a tiny bit of X1 experience coming in, but I'm not sure it was enough to really count.

Hate to say this because Scott is awesome and his books are amazing.  However, with his X3 book around the corner I will give you an honest, hold off unless you can get it at a reduced price. Amazon is still charging full price. I absolutely think you should buy X3 Power when it comes out, but if you are looking for something to get you up and started and were willing to look at material made for older versions, there are other options. The older X1 and X2 videos in the cakewalk store are available dirt cheap now.  Another option, and it does feel a little awkward mentioning what some might consider a competing book with a questionably similar name, is The Power in Sonar (Quick Pro Guide) by William Edstrom.  I don't consider them competing products because one is truly a quick start guide and the other is as complete of a resource as you will find. I hope Scott can appreciate my honesty in this matter because I honestly want every Sonar user to buy the X3 book when it comes out. I just think if one is going to start with a book that does not cover current version, price and redundancy are factors. Good chance much of the material in X3 Power will be repeats of what was in X2 power.  Buy going with the other book option and getting X3 Power when released, the user gets a much more cost efficient option and won't be re-buying the same material in a few months.

Hey Dubdisciple,

No problem at all. I agree... I think people should definitely get the X3 book if they don't mind waiting. I'm hoping most won't mind. And Amazon will probably lower the pre-order price once we get closer to release. Not sure why they have it so high now.

Thanks!
Scott

Probably better off waiting and just getting a groove3 pass to watch the Eli Kransberg vids (or buy the X3 vid bundle for $20) for now. That'll get you started then you'll have Scott's book for more in depth study/reference when it comes out. Editing seems to have changed significantly in X3 which is obviously a major part of production. That's just a lowly Beeps opinion tho.

I figured you had no control over the price.    It annoys me more that they price kindle and physical copy the same.

Scott's books are a good read, and it is very nice to have a whole book more or less organized for self-teaching and in a format that does not require an e-reader.

But Sonar is one of the rare exceptions in the modern world of software distribution that actually comes with a readable and amazingly complete user manual: SONAR_X3_Reference_Guide.pdf comes with the distributions or is available for download here:

The tutorials sections will get you up to speed in pretty much plain English. Then if you still need a translation, I would wait for the X3 Power to come out.

Beep. you are hardly lowly.  You are an experienced user wit hlots of hands on experience with the actual product.  I find the opinion of "regular guys" who strugglejust like me  very valuable in evaluating a product.  Someone like bitflipper is a great source of info, but his technical experience probably means his workflow when approaching a new product is very different than my own.
