  • Feedback emulation: Uh... does this exist? Any tricks using Producer effects?

Listening to some Melvins and I'm just realizing how much I miss some nice squealy feedback on my guitar stuff. There's no way I could crank my amps loud enough to get the right results without getting booted out of my place. With all the wacky emulators out there and fancy digital tricks there MUST be a way to fake this. Any ideas? Cheers.

I'm a total feedback merchant.

You can achieve great feedback even at low levels by cranking up your gain and making sure you are playing through your noisiest pickups right into the cabs on your monitors, easily done....(so basically DI into your soundcard and play through GTR5 or TH2)

My band ZnO is all about feedback and I have no issues with neighbours and they are right next door to my studio.

A feedback emulation wont get you anywhere near The Melvins

Hi, Mark.

And you... mic that or...??? I have managed to get it to squeal like that back when I didn't have to worry about noise but this place really is bad for sound leakage. Like my neighbors could probably hear me fart it's so bad. I'm super pissed about it.

OT... You reminded me, I have to download winrar. Been kind of scattered trying to get some stuff together around here. Manage to hurt myself in the process too. D'oh. Cheers.

Hey Beep!, No need to mic anything if you GAIN THE HELL OUT OF IT and take off any kind of noisegate!! great feedback frun to be had at low levels, increase the top end on the cabs as well to really let the feedback be free (you can always bring it down after the feedback has been recorded)

Also, you can play with the guitar head resting on the monitor, instant feedback - again achievable at low levels.

I'll look forwards to when you get a RAR unpacker

Interesting. I'll have to play around with that. I guess my understanding of the interactions involved in feedback are faulty.

And I'm listening to the first track now. Nice! Fits in with my mood today. I had switched over to some Butthole Surfers after the Melvins so this has segued nicely. ;-)

I need to try this out myself now... you are saying that you can DI into GR5 and create a feedback loop off your monitors?

Yep, thats how I use feedback, no need for real amps.

Also, REALLY good for feedback is an electric acoustic wacked through distortion and high gain, the bass rumbles through the body and will feedback like no tomorrow, again works superbly at low levels.

Well, there's the Fender Runaway Feedback pedal.  Never used one, but there are some cool Ebow / attack delay FX to be had with the 100% Wet position.

As much of a pedal freak as I am, there's only so much room on the pedalboard(s).  In a pinch, I use an Electro-Harmonix Freeze or SuperEgo pedal with an Eventide PitchFactor.
