  • Sonar x3 keeps crashing

Hi,

I've just finished my X3 installation. When opening and starting the playback of an "old" X2 project, the music starts playing and after about 30s the playback stops. Sonar doesn't react anymore. At this stage I've only solo-ed only one midi channel, without any audio, so there should be no vst or audio driver active. (I've already tried to change the ASIO settings to WDM anyways - but it keeps crashing.)

Here's my system:
- Win7x64
- Sonar x3 (c) producer
- Midiman DeltaAudio 1010lt
- 2 ESI m4uxl
- 1 Midisport 4x4
- and several USB modules

The system was setup from scratch some weeks ago, so every driver incl. Sonar should be up to date.
X2 worked very well on the same hardware before I re-installed everything. So I don't believe in hardware issues.

Do you have any advice for me?
What can I check or test?
How would you start debugging?
Can I activate kind of logging?

I appreciate any kind of help! :)

Cheers,
Chris

For starters, maybe create a short project completely in X3, and see if that works okay.  That would indicate the X3 installation is basically solid.  Then sift through the X2 project and try and isolate the element that is messing things up.

The driver will be active.
Please check the event viewer.
And for fun please disable the 64-Bit Double Precision audio engine.

Thanks for your feedback! I've already created a new project with x3 - even with audio engine. Works perfectly. So it must be something within the old x2 project. There are V-Vocal-Clips inside which x3 doesn't have. Maybe that's it?

Thanks,
Chris

V-Vocal is still available in X3, but you will have to use the X2 custom install, and select V-Vocal only to install.
Then it will appear as a Region FX in X3.
I have many X2 projects using V-Vocal that I can open in X3c, and have no troubles working with them.

Hey nynekker,

what do you mean by "but you will have to use the X2 custom install"? I've installed X3 on a new HD.

Best,
Chris

What are your actual computer system specs (processor, Ram, drives, etc)?

X3 does not include V-Vocal. If the projects require V-Vocal, you will have to install V-Vocal from a prior version of SONAR. IIRC, V-Vocal is not a separately installable component. Perform an advanced install of X2 (there is a screen near the beginning of the install process providing basic and advanced install options) and install SONAR. The advanced install allows you to skip installing everything else but since you are running the X2 installer you may want to install R-Mix (it is not included with X3 either).

that's almost certainly it - but really sonar should handle this more gracefully, ie, handle it like a missing plugin, not crash, there's too much crashing generally
