Is there a way to loop an audio clip independent of the project tempo? Grove-Clip looping syncs to the project tempo, which is not what I want.

Why?

I'd like to set up a project as sort of a sketch pad to jam and record different drum beats at different tempos. I'd then like to pick a beat, trim the audio and loop it, without worrying about the tempo of the project or anything like that. Is this possible?

Yes, if I understand what you're asking, you can just convert the audio clip into a Groove clip and it will automatically follow the project tempo. Select the clip and press Ctrl+L to toggle the Groove clip conversion.

Thanks but you are misunderstanding my question. I stated that I want to loop "worrying about the tempo of the project". I just want to loop the audio clip as if project tempo does not exist.

Hmmm... then no, I don't think you can do that. SONAR doesn't provide independent looping of individual clips where the clips have their own tempo. It has Groove clips, which sync to tempo and it allows you to create a single set of loop points for the entire project, but that's it.

Wow, that's nuts. Looping audio clips is very basic functionality.

Thanks for the answer.

I'm curious as to what software has that feature? If I wanted to do something like that in sonar there are a few ways i would go about it, first being third party sampler. You can take any loop and turn off the looping, and use paste special to duplicate it multiple times. I personally would not go that route because it would just sound like a mess. Another method using Sonar native plugins would be to use plugs capable of supporting multiple samples like dim pro and map them to different parts of keyboard, triggering them in a way that somehow was rhythmical despite different tempos

If you play the first down beat of what would be the beginning of the next iteration of the "loop" when recording, you can just truncate the clip at that point, and then copy-paste as many iterations as you want, one at a time, snapping the Now time to the end of each preceding clip before pasting the next.

It's also fairly straightfoward to snap the timeline to the overall tempo of a clip so that you can use groove clip looping.
