Hi there,

I am playing around with the "12 Channel Metal Quick Kit".
I really like the gated reverb idea (although I get more consistent results using the donation ware plug-in called "Ambience" by Magnus at Smartelectronix) and especially the gated Toms Work really well for the hardest hits (highest velocity).

I figured out that the gate threshold is pretty high so it does not allow for much dynamics... if any in eg. high rack toms.

So if I turn down the threshold I can make it sound the same for softer hits (lower velocity), but then the harder hits (higher velocity) then starts to sound longer and less controlled.

How do you go about this?
Do you automate the threshold to match the dynamics (a lot of Work since drums usually sound more natural when using lots of dynamics) or do you apply a different approach to achieve this faster?

I'm using Sonar X3d Producer

Thanks,
Dennis

Maybe try fiddling with the release time of the gate. Are the toms all routed to one track? If not obviously you could set the threshold for each tom but if they were isolated this thread probably wouldn't be here. You could also try out the Transient Shaper to trim the decay. I think Danny made a video. Google "Transient Shaper" + "Cakewalk" + "Danny Danzi" and the thread or vid should show up.
