  • How Many Are Using Custom Themes?

Okay...so we have a theme editor, and several members of the community have posted custom themes (which is quite cool). But I'm curious whether people are actually using custom themes, or sticking with Tungsten/Mercury.

I (mostly) use the stock themes for screen shots and such, but for my own projects, I'm definitely into using my own theme and just wondered how many SONARians are doing likewise. Or if you're using someone else's theme, that counts too as a custom theme.

The main reason I use my own theme isn't so much the looks, but because it highlights the elements that are most important to me in the various projects I do.

I don't have the patience to poke around and adjust theme ideas. I want to spend my creative time creating music with Sonar.

So, I'm not a theme maker.

But I really liked Tungsten. Then someone (I'll edit this post later and give the name) posted a really nice theme and I switched to that. It's nice to have folks post their ideas and looks. The one I added is great!

Sorry guys.  The themes are very cool but not for me.  I use the standards.  I don't want to spend the time tinkering with it.  With SONAR the value for me is what I can produce sonically and honestly I don't care much about the screen colors.  Never have.  I try to spend as much time as I can making the music and I guess I'm too stingy with my time to worry about all the pretty themes.  Again,  I have admired many of the beautiful themes that have been posted (and even have many of them saved) but I just don't mess with them.  Great question Craig!  I'll also be curious to hear the broader response from the forum.  Cheers to all!  Dave

Since creating it, I have been using my Light Green Tuncury theme.

I am using my own modified version which is based on Tungsten.  Could not go back to Mercury (Unless to test something)

What the Theme editor needs, however, is a function that shows a graphic representation of the GUI, you mouse click on a part of that graphic representation, and it locates that element in the object tree.  Not a biggie, but would be handy.

I really liked the Tungsten theme when it first came out, used it for a while, and tinkered very minimally with the Theme Editor when it first came out . . . but soon enough found myself back on the Mercury Theme because of it's ability to quickly change track highlight colours in Track View and Console View (Yes, the whole strip) For me, the ability to be able to colour code groups of tracks greatly outweighs anything the Theme Editor or Tungsten has to offer.

I use it and I like it a lot, but I made only a few minor yet very practical changes e.g. colours of those buttons that always give trouble when engaged by mistake or forgotten to disengage at the end of the previous session, which would be punch-in, offset mode, etc.

And I added the official studio logo as a Sonar background, which looks nice :-)

So overall, it took me about 15 minutes to make these changes and apply to main and mobile DAW.

BTW, my changes are based on the Tungsten theme, which is my favourite since the day one it was released. Yet I would appreciate somewhat bigger colour indications for the channels (which was THE MAJOR request ever since Tungsten came out)

I like Tungsten and pretty much stick to it. There are a few things I would probably change but can't wade through the Theme Editor. I really liked some of the examples people posted. I feel like you kinda need a pro to design it for it to be really good.

Yes, that's why I put in the beginning that using someone else's theme counted to me as using a custom theme. I think it's great that people are willing to share their work.

What I've found in creating my theme is yes it takes patience, and quite a bit of effort to do a complete theme. But I don't really have to do a complete theme anyway, I work on it a little here, a little there. Slowly but surely it's getting nailed down.

Interestingly I don't think it necessarily looks better than the stock themes, because it's designed to provide stark contrasts among the screen elements rather than give them an artistic mien. For me, though, that's useful.

I use the Gold theme I created. It's the only one I use now.
