I started with 2.0 for DOS and have upgraded with every version since.  I striped one track of a 4 track cassette recorder with SMPTE to record audio and bounced tracks as needed.  I was definitely hooked on recording with computers from then on.  I was amazed then, and I am still amazed today at what we can do with DAW recording.  I love technology.

(I would love to have an original floppy copy of version 1.0 for DOS to complete my 'collection'.)

pharohoknaughtyIt would be really cool if Cakewalk just gave away the DOS version, unsupported. It would be good for marketing and cost them nothing. Plus, the memories...

Agreed 100% :) That being said, I'm fairly sure that the powers that be wouldn't mind sharing this old DOS gem. The problem though... actually FINDING a copy of CW5DOS, as it seems to be virtually NON-EXISTANT :(

pharohoknaughtyI used to really enjoy midi, until it moved to windows.

Like I posted previously, I never had (or used) CW for DOS... although I did use Voyetra's "Sequencer Plus Gold" for a few years. After I first bought Cakewalk Professional 3.01 for Windows though, I never looked back... even still today :)

CakeAlexSBetter still port it to phone...

If I'm not mistaken, there have been several ports of "DOSBox" for various phones... which would run CW5DOS just fine :)

Still my favourite port even though I don't own any apple products (memories memories!):

Hah hah hah! It looks beautiful in a sense. Though I used DOS, I do not remember having used any Cakewalk product for DOS or Windows in that time. I used another gem for music in Windows 3.1 and then Windows 95. I think it was called MidiSoft Studio. Ahh *sniff* I remember the good times (Life was also simpler than it is now.)

What I liked a lot about MidiSoft Studio was the score editor. I think you could also import audio files to two tracks. Oh, the nostalgia. Oh, the joy, arrrgh If I could only find a copy of this software and relive the joy of that time...

I remember Cakewalk version 1.0. At the time I could not figure it out. I was able to sequence on a Roland MC500 and then the MC500mkII. It was fun learning all that. The sound gear were an RD5000, S550, M1r, Kurzweil ? and others. I think it was a Roland drum pad thingy. It had maybe 16 buttons you could trigger the different drums.

Those were good memories. There's an interesting story there also involving Samuel French having it's lawyers send us a cease and desist order.
