Hi Caminitic,

Sound on sound mode records takes without muting previous takes. It does not effect the comping tool so swipe isolate still takes effect. Knowledge is power with this feature. I think you'll find it much more useful as you get to know it. Check out this video:

Click on the X3 Comping video. It's a 6 minute video that describes how the modes and tools work. I'm hoping the methods described here will make it easier for you to comp performances and ween you off that ol'e "K" key;). It also describes how to use the Speed comp audition feature (2'53" in). Using this feature allows you to hear the material while preserving the mute states of the clips. Basically, you don't have to mute/unmute material to pick a desired performance. Just select the clip header and hit shift+spacebar.

Just a little bit of feedback to Cakewalk.  If I used the comping feature every day, I'm sure I would have no issues.  However, I use it more like once a month.  And every single time I try to do comping (sorting through the takes), I get stuck and have to go watch that video all over again.

It is a very powerful feature, but there is something about it that is just not intuitive enough.  And I think that is what is behind most of these comments.

I haven't used it for a few weeks, so I can't even remember exactly where I get stuck, but the next time, I'll try to take note of that.

It seems to me I stumble in two areas:

1) figuring out how to put in the splits.  I can't ever seem to get them exactly where I want them, and it isn't obvious how to deal with situations where you end up with little slivers.

2) How to get into the mode where you do the speed audition.  For the life of me, I can't remember how to get into that mode.

Best way to understand take lanes in X3: buy Groove3's Sonar X3 Explained. It's $15 right now and it explains the new concepts very well.

But as a prerequisite, I highly recommend this: forget everything you know about editing using layers. That knowledge won't help you when it comes to take lanes.
