I suppose the question is still valid if they're on your machine, but never get used... or VERY rarely.

At one time I had waaaaay too many plugs... a lot of that free junk and realized I never really used them. They're now off my main hard drives.   I'm not using X3 as of yet, but the idea of JUST X3 (and maybe a stereo editor) sounds appealing.
The ProChannel, Breverb, etc seems to fill that need and I don't need a pile of "boutique" or different reverbs, flangers, etc.  I like going to my FX list and not scrolling for days.  For ME, if I can't get a decent sound out of these tools, it's not the software...  it's garbage in garbage out.  But that's me speaking about me.

I know some swear by their UAD or Waves or Valhalla room ....or just have a BIG pallet to chose from.  .. but the idea of a native, stripped down setup seems really appealing at this point.

Excluding VSTi of course  :-)

. . . guess that makes us pseudo-exclusive to Sonar plugs, since we had to go elsewhere to get proper soft synths.

I was using only the Sonar Producer included plugins for audio processing for a time . . . then I discovered I really had to buy Valhalla Room because I liked the sound of it better than Sonitus or Breverb . . . then I discovered Ozone 5 was better for mastering . . . oh yeah, then I discovered BFD2 was the best drums . . . oh right, then I had to have the Melodyne Editor upgrade . . . what? MusicLab's Real Guitar on sale !! . . . but other than those, after purchasing all of the Sonar Prochannel plugins, I can't think of anything one might need to create some great music, except, oh yeah, a better mic, and a better guitar, 88 key weighted midi controller, and my mixer's getting old . . . . . . .

Sonar X-whatever Producer @ $149 / year really seems like the best deal.
The centre of the wheel that makes it all go around.

For the most part this has been true for me, but recently I have gotten a couple of third party plug-ins to fit very specific needs (and they happened to be on sale for a good price). I think X3 can easily make music without any 3rd party plugs, especially Studio and Producer, and the rest is more a matter of taste as we fall into our own preferred work flows.

As with all life, analyze the situation and adapt accordingly...

I try to use as many native plugs as I can without resorting to 3rd party plugs.

BUT, you won't find any of my projects that don't include BFD2 & T-Racks, and a few others from Nomad Factory

I do pretty much stick to what's in producer, or has come with previous versions.  I love the ProChannel.

I do use Guitar Rig 5 (but it was upgrade from Guitar Rig 4 included in X1).

I also use Ez/Superior Drummer a lot, but effects/processor wise I am 99.9% Sonar. Although I own other VSTis, it is rare that I use any non-Cakewalk ones now, excluding the Toontrack stuff.

My X3  is currently on a new lap top so I'm looking to keep my set up as lean and mean as possible .
Aside from adding the Overloud VKFX rack and grabbing a bunch of the Addictive Drum Midis ,
I'm pretty much stock .
I'm actually very plesantly surprised with how good this version of SONAR is
all the best ,

When I first got X1 I started experimenting with doing two versions of the same project. One with only the Sonar plugs and one with any third party plugs I chose. I would then run the tracks for clients and ask them which they preferred. Most times the client would choose the third party ones.
As Sonar progressed into X2, the line began to blur. A lot having to do with the amp sims and the DSF library for Dim Pro improving. And let's not forget the variety of great quality third party plugs and ProChannel plugs.  The bottom line is Sonar is a lot of musical bang for the buck. While most of us here are not big time record producers I agree with the other posts that if you can't make some great sounding tracks with Sonar and just it's arsenal then it's time to go back to fly fishing or whatever trips your trigger.
If we could just tweak that audio engine a little more and get the latency issues down a little farther while using some real cpu gobbling plugs.........oh,well!

I haven't used Sonar in about 2 years since X1 and will jump back in with X3d, so I'm glad to hear the reliance on a boatload of external plugins is becoming less of a requirement. One thing I dreaded doing was constantly trying to keep all those disparate plugins up to date. Each one has a different website you need to go to and try to figure out what the latest version is, some have their own installers, some have their own licensing and activation schemes.

By last count my plugin count is approaching 400 (I'm sure there are people with much more than that). Sure I don't use them all but I need to keep them around because I've used some of them in older projects that I might want to work on again.

Once I install X3d I'm going to create a new plugin folder and just put the absolute minimum 3rd party plugins in there and rely on the Sonar plugins as much as possible.

However I feel kind of bad for some of the independent plugin developers as I'm sure this trend is causing their sales to dry up.

I feel bad for some of the smaller operations that  have always tried to offer the consumer a great product at a reasonable price.  I don't feel bad at all for companies selling average plugs that get by mostly on name and/or reputation that dates back to their hardware history. I think companies like Valhalla Room  a productions will be ok for a while because they make plugins that offer reasonable alternatives at decent prices and outperform plugs thaat cost a lot more. Products like Melodyne will be fine because they offer a unique product.  Companies like Isotope will be fine because they make products that are typically noticeably better than what is included in DAWS.

All my plugs are inside SONAR (Waves, UAD, Izotope, Voxengo, IK Multimenia, Native Instruments.......).

How does Juan use "outside" plugs while "inside" SONAR?
