In the January edition of SoS, long (5 page) review by Sam Inglis - interesting as he's a long-time Cubase user. Gives it a pretty good review to be fair, main issue was with the restrictions in Console view (as many of us have said) regarding space for seeing sends, inserts, PC components etc. Didn't go into MIDI much. Summing up, says it competes with Reaper and S1 for 'best-value' DAW which seems to be damning with faint praise, but overall the tone was positive.

Don't expect any journalist to say something like
This is better or as good as Pro Tools....
They fear they would be laughed out the business.

I remember when DTP publishers were using Quark as the industry standard. I noticed that version 2 of InDesign was a far better product, totally KILLED Quark. When suggesting it might be time for a change they just laughed at me. 3 years later they were all using it (Quark a distant memory).

Cake does not have a Pro Tools killer yet, but give it time.

Moral of the story....

Perceptions are more important than facts, at least for some people...

well to be fair he points out early in the article that all the 'big' DAWs are mature software and therefore which one you use is as much personal preference/allegiance as it is a logical call. And personally I don't think Sonar is better than PT, or Cubase, but not the reverse either; all are perfectly good and will do the job.

It was good to read a non-biased review though.

I did EXACTLY the same thing!!!!

I felt like I was the little boy in the story "The Emperor's New Clothes"

I feel pretty justified now but at the time if you weren't using QUARK on a MAC you weren't a designer!!!

I am now also using SONAR on a PC

See we should have been the DTP'ers!

Oh at least I stopped them using MAC's. They kept harping on about it but I told 'em I wasn't going to support MAC when Quark runs perfectly happily on a PC, fair enough if the office used MAC's but it didn't.
