  • Static when playing through audio fx plug-in

When playing my guitar through audio FX, like TH2, TH3, LePou (love LePou plug-ins!), etc. I get static when playing. When recording, I get static, but the static doesn't get recorded. Seems to normally occur when I use overdrive settings, but has occurred recording clean. I go direct - guitar to audio interface. Here's the kicker, I've have, and used, the following audio interfaces, Focusrite Scarlett (2nd gen), Tascam 2x2, Behringer U-Phoria UM2 and Lexicon Alpha. I have latency issues with Lexicon, but I don't seem to have the static (figures), but this interface won't work due to latency.

I've run LetencyMon on Tascam and Focusrite and both come back "Your system appears to be suitable for handling real-time audio and other tasks without dropouts. LatencyMon has been analyzing your system for  0:00:23  (h:mm:ss) on all processors."

I've checked and unchecked Remove DC Offset During Record, doesn't make a difference. I've made multiple changes to Preferences > Sync and Caching selection, but nothing helps. I've enabled Plug-in Load Balancing, didn't fix the problem, although I do see that CPU meter is more balanced, which is pretty flat when I hear the static.

Static isn't constant. In fact, seems to worse when I start playing. After playing a little it can be less or goes away, but it never completely goes away and eventually, it will start up again. I've checked that all items in Device Manager are updated. Built in graphics card is Intel HD Graphics 4400. I also disabled the card - didn't help. I've disabled my network, shut down lots of windows services, nothing helps. I've disabled my USB settings under Windows power plan, set my graphic card to performance. System hard drive (C:) is only 25% full (732GB free). Cakewalk project drive (D:) is 75% full (249GB free).

Seems to have started after Windows anniversary update. When recording, TaskMgr has CPU system under 10% and no spiking. Memory stays flat at approx 4GB (my system has 8GB), and both disk are flat (zero usage) when playing, with a few bumps to 1%.

Basic recording set up, two audio tracks for guitar (one panned left the other panned right), routing to bus. Bus has audio fx loaded, and I either load plug-ins via FX Chain, or individually. That's it. Using Normal default template and no other plug-ins loaded. Seems to be worse when loading other soft plug-ins, EZDrummer and even worse if I use Addictive Drum 2. I'm far from clipping on any of my track meters - tracks, bus and master.

Any other info I should provide? Any other suggestions? I tried to load Pro Tools | First (came with Focusrite), but couldn't get around hardware initialization error when starting up. [Small rabbit trail on this, for being Pro Tools their support page has gotta be the worse I have ever seen, so a big thank you Cakewalk for making things somewhat simple...holy cow PT was bad...and I do IT for a living so I no how to get around bad!]

Feels like it's related to some background Windows resources due to it coming and going.

I've found other posts but couldn't find anything to help. This one came close, but the resolve was a new audio interface...I've got that covered

Additional update: I tried in X3 Producer (forgot I had it installed) with Focusrite, same issue. Less static than Platinum, but more stuttering, so same problem.

Are you sure it isn't the same static that a regular amp would have? What kind of guitar?

Problem with headphones?

RSMCGUITAR - happens with all guitars, Gibson, Fender. I did double check to be sure.
rcklln - Yes, I heard with my headphones as well.

I forgot to add, I've also tried different USB ports as well. Problem is much worse with LePou plug ins. So it seems related to a resource issue.

I once had an issue similar to what is described and it ended up being a problem with my headphones. Certain amp sim presets (frequencies) would affect It more than others so I thought I'd throw that out there.

Seems like something is going on in the monitor section otherwise the static would likely be recorded. The only other thing I could suggest is checking any input/direct monitor settings on the interface or in any software mixer it might have.

I see your using a Dell inspiron 3000 Laptop ? Try disabling your wireless in Device manager.
make sure its the Wireless driver and not the Ethernet/Broadcom.

Just give it a shot and test it out.
Your Problem has wireless interference written all over it.

Tried my other pair of headphones Sony MDR 7506, but same issue. I'll see if there are some input/direct settings that I can change.

It's a desktop, but I does have wireless and I disabled it, but didn't help . I also tried completely disabling my network, which I thought was the original issue, but didn't change anything.

I experience no static with any other audio in my system, Windows Media Player, YouTube, etc. I'm going to test with a non-Cakewalk DAW and see if the problem still occurs. I'm also wondering if a reinstall of Sonar Plat is needed.

Thank you for the suggestions, because I'm at a total loss.

im sorry to hear this. I had a similar issue about 4 years ago (Sonar x1)
and no matter what I did, it would still happen and similarly, it was fine in other programs (like yourself)
I also disabled my network and...nothing.
but when I disabled only the Wireless (device manager / Wireless Adapter) it worked.
no more static. I used a hybrid back then (DAW / Online surfer Laptop) so every time I needed to use sonar, I would have to disable it. Strangely enough, the static was never recorded to track, only audible through monitoring.
that's why I mentioned this "has wireless interference written all over it".

Sorry for your troubles.
Maybe some bad cords ? Bad connections ?
I also had a USB port go bad on me once. what a PITA that was to troubleshoot :-)
Because the USB port worked but with intermittence (some times dropped out)
but if its not being printed (this static) then it should be easy enough to track down.
it has to be after the line in signal and somewhere in the output section.
(possibly even a grounding issue or an IPhone next to your Interface)

I was hoping, and I suspected, it was related to the network, but no luck. I tried it through Cubase Elements LE (v. 8) and no issues. But I'm clueless with Cubase, so I wasn't able to have my guitar route to a bus from two separate inputs. It did give me the idea of loading my plugin onto one mono channel, so they'd be like for like, nope, still the problem in Plat. I might have to re-install Plat.

I had the issue using a Focusrite Scarlett as well.
did you try maybe a new USB cable ? not just the port, but a new cable ?
Though again...Don't rule out a bad USB port on your PC. they wear out.
What I did was set up a breaker so I didn't need to plug/unplug my USB cable in/out 500 times a month.
one switch turns on the interface, my speakers, my control surface=Mackie MCU.

when my USB port went bad, OMG it drove me nuts (pretty much what you are experiencing )
I was moving any wireless item 20 feet away from my studio.
when my wireless was the issue, I figured that out here.

I don't think reinstalling Splat is going to solve your problem.
im guessing its a bad cable, some sort of interference.

Do you have any plug ins that are stand alone plug ins ? Guitar rig that you can open up on the desktop ?
possibly download a freebie somewhere and test that out.
it would also help if you could do a test run in Cubase
