  • Will adding an often used sample library to my boot SSD impact X3's performance?

Hi, all...
I'm upgrading my system to a 6 core 4930 i7 cpu and adding a samsung 840 pro 512gb drive as my C drive. I have 3 other drives for Samples, Songs & backups... I'll have a big chunk of unused space on the drive and often use EW pianos, which takes a long time to load.  Can I move this to the C drive ssd and not impact performance in any way?

Honestly, I'd probably take a cheaper 120 or 160 GB disk as boot SSD and use the 512GB one for samples exclusively. I have a 120 GB SSD boot drive on my laptop and my desktop and while space isn't limitless, it's no chore to keep some free space. I use other drives for recording, documents and content.

I did put my Maschine core library and a bunch of expansions on there, maybe 20GB total, and did not notice any significant drop in OS or DAW performance. I put them on there because I use them a lot and I only have one SSD in each computer (other drives are regular).

It is certainly worth testing. I would imagine it would work fine.

Absolutely !

Once you've tried an SSD, you'll never go back.
Everything is snappy, programs load in an instant, boot takes but a few seconds.

On my 120gb ssd, I've three partitions :
C:  the OS
D:  my programs, utilities, etc.
E:  Sonar and all its accessories including all my samples.

I keep all user related data "My xxx", Mozilla profiles, etc.  on separate HDD drives/partitions for each user.
You'll really appreciate the time it takes to load large samples and drum kits off an SSD.

I have a Samsung EVO 240 GB drive on my laptop and all my samples for Dim Pro, Addictive Drums etc are on it and it works great. I love SSDs, especially on this laptop, made a huge difference going from a 5400 rpm HD to this with a clean install.

No, it will not affect X3's performance. The only "difference" you are introducing is where you are getting your samples from, which will be much quicker for you.

I guess it depends on what we mean by performance.  For one thing I figure I'm part of the performance picture and if I can work faster then so does X3.

I also doubt everything you need in a project is loaded into memory up front (?), so wherever the pieces are gotten from will affect performance until everything is in memory.  And new stuff that gets added certainly won't be.
