  • Ocean Way Drums Multichannel in Kontakt 5...no sound... [SOLVED...by workaround] (p.2)

To the OP, assuming you want to get this working eventually.

I don't have Ocean Way drums but I have Neil Peart Drums, Steven Slate Drums (the Kontakt version) and some other Sonic Reality kits. I have not had a problem setting up the routing for multiple channels as you describe. Also I have not had issues with the likes of Superior Drummer or BFD.

So there is not a fundamental flaw in Sonar that prevents this.  Why not post a little more detail of how the routing is set up? maybe with a few screen shots and people on this forum will help you through. It's got to be something simple.

Have you successfully set up Kontakt for multiple outs using other instruments? Try loading two or three instruments from the factory library and assign them to sperate outs. Does this work for you, and if so can you see any differences in the routing compared to your Ocean Way setup?

This forum is pretty helpful but statements like "It's too bad that Sonar just got its butt kicked by a $70.00 program" will get people annoyed, particularly when posted before anyone has had a chance to make any constructive suggestion on resolving the issue.

Hi B.R.
I do that kind of routing with K5 drum kits all the time, both in Sonar and in Reaper (and PT, and Cubase and....). If you can give some details or screenshots I'll try and help out. I haven't tried Ocean Way drums, but I've certainly done it with all the Komplete 9 Ultimate kits as well as Purrrfect drums.

Thanks, guys, if I have time, maybe I'll try posting some screen shots tomorrow evening. I've been continuing on with Reaper all evening, but I'm sure I'll eventually hit a sticking point where I NEED Sonar! Lol

This thread is not allowing me to submit this message with screen shots. I will submit the text below now and attempt to make another reply with the screenshots.

In first shot, I assign the kick to the first of the new stereo pair outputs I made for each kit piece. I made them stereo because for a brief moment I was able to get sound when I had the kick and snare assigned to "unassigned" mono tracks each, but they were both hard panned left and right, respectively, regardless of how I had the pan pots set in either Sonar or on the kit piece in Ocean Way.

In the second shot, you can see how the kick is getting a signal in the Ocean Way window, and the MIDI track in Sonar is getting a signal, but no signal is showing up in the individual Sonar tracks.

The third shot shows how I re-assigned each kit piece to the new stereo pair tracks in Ocean Way. For some reason, when I reassign "Kt. unassigned 1 and 2" instead of the original "Kt. St. 1(1) and Kt. St. 2(2)" to the kick, the "plugin outputs" are automatically re-named from 1/2 to 11/12. On the snare, its outputs are renamed from 3/4 to 13/14, and so on.

Back to the first shot, if I try assigning each piece to the group of the "original" outputs at the top of the list that are named by kit piece, I do get sound of the whole kit, but the signals for some of the kit pieces are all mixed up, particularly on the cymbals and toms. For example, I can hear the floor tom, and the master channel shows a signal for it, but no signal shows up in the Floor tom channel in Sonar! That makes it useless for me to assign FX in its FX bin, needless to say. That's the whole reason for using multichannel kits...lol! No matter what logical (or even semi-logical) output channel I try assigning the floor tom to in Sonar, no signal shows up in its output meter when the floor tom is played. The signal shows up in the Snare output meter instead!

It's really hard to explain the problem I'm having, even with these screen shots, so I understand if there's not enough info here to go by. I'm just burned out on trying to figure this out in Sonar and will just use Reaper for now, if no solution is apparent. Thanks for looking, anyway. :-)

No, it won't let me paste in any of my screen shots...to high-res, I guess. I don't have a photo editor like Photoshop on my computer, so I'm giving up on this.

you need to host the files somewhere and put the link in the post.
