I am  having more and more trouble with either sonar, or my computer.  I don't get these problems when I use reaper!  For example.  I can be going along in a project.  after some punching in and doing takes etc.  the computer starts taking longer and longer to respond to keyboard commands.   I get frequent audio dropouts.  Damn  I had better performance with my old core 2 duo computer and a delta 1010... This is really getting sickening.  Sonar is getting worse as far as Im aconcerned.  yes it has some great features, but for example.  the snafu they had with the ca2a plug in was a bummer.
Is this the windows updates?  the motu drivers?  what is up with this?  I have a 10 foot usb cable that connects the motu and the computer.  Is that too long?  my usb keyboard/mouse cable is longer.  I don't know what the problem is.  could it be plug ins.  I did just buy a new waves puigchild plug in but this was happening before that.  I want to make music. not fix computers.
Oh and while I am ****ing,  that motu avb interface is a bummer!!!  I just discovered that I can not access that unless I am online!!!   WTF is that?

I was having severe start-up problems with my new version of Sonar Pro. I am using an appollo firewire interface. Just for kicks - look for a line in the configuration file called maxthreadcount. It defaults to 0 (which means use all cores) Try changing that to 4 or 6. This solved all my audio studders immediately. It's an easy and non destructive fix to try out, see if it works for your set-up.

Thanks! I will try that.  but where is the configuration file?

Is this the windows updates?

the 2017.05 update definitely screwed with the GUI (it is unusable on my main system but strangely enough works on the others) and I have recently reported poor performance when working at 96 kHz (independent of audio interface!)

Probably not. I even use USB extenders and they work fine ... BUT I had some USB cables (not extenders) of 4m length which did not work at all ... however, that is easy to test - just use a shorter cable and see if the problem disappears.

that is not correct. if connected via USB you can access it direct from the PC it is connected to ... if you want access from another PC to adjust mixer, routing, etc. only then you need it to be hooked up via LAN

online you don't have to be at all (only if you want to do firmware upgrades)

Download and run the free Latency Mon.  May provide some insight.

For MOTU USB interface, I have an MOTU 896Mk3 Hybrid and it is flakey (dropouts/clicks, etc) with USB 3.0 but solid with USB 2.0.  A bad PC connection can cause Sonar to hang up and one problem I had with my MOTU on USB 3.0.  This is an issue with other MOTU USB devices according to a big thread on the gearslutz forum.

The symptoms sound like a memory resource leak.
Do you experience these symptoms with a single project... or are they present across multiple projects?
If the symptoms are limited to a single project, copy/paste all of the track data into a new/empty project.
If the symptoms are present across multiple projects, try to reproduce the issue and have a look at the amount of memory used.

USB cables are typically good up to 5 meters.

Do you experience the same behavior when using the Mackie Onyx Blackbird?

Make sure you don't have some other process going on in the background, like an autobackup.

I was having problems with a sluggish trackball last week.  I looked at my external drive light and realized something was accessing it alot.  It turns out that my auto backup time got reset to that evening and it started backing up.  Once I turned that off, everything went back to normal.

I have that at my studio with a similar computer and an i5.  I mainly use that for band tracking so I don't do long punch in recording sessions with that

I have had the problem with several different projects
